Arepera Guacuco's Pabellon Arepa, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

Dish no. 54: Pabellon arepa from Arepera Guacuco (44 Irving Avenue, Brooklyn; 347-305-3300)

Over the course of its Bushwick residency, Guacuco has become the sort of neighborhood staple that lures in the area's denizens at least a few times a month, if not every week. Perhaps that's because it doles out inexpensive dishes from a menu that runs deep in Venezuelan arepas, a bit of a limited commodity here in New York City. The eatery's pabellon arepa is worth traveling for -- a split cornmeal disk comes stuffed with juicy braised beef, earthy black beans, caramelized sweet plantains, and a dusting of salty queso fresco. It's rich and wholesome -- and just one will fill you up.

In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we're traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They're presented here as a countdown, but we're listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what's good to eat in this town right this very second.
