JJ's Asian Fusion's Shumai, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes
Dish no. 62: Shumai at JJ's Asian Fusion (37-05 31st Avenue, Queens, 718-626-8888)
Dumplings are a dime a dozen in this city, so there are few that dramatically stand out from the rest, especially in the looks department. But the shumai at JJ's Asian Fusion in Astoria are an exception. Here, $5 will get you five juicy meatballs of delicately seasoned minced chicken and saltwater-kissed crabmeat rolled into thin, savory egg noodles, making them look like little edible Koosh balls. Steamed on a broad bamboo leaf, these playful pods are served with a boat of housemade ponzu sauce perfect for dunking.
In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we're traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They're presented here as a countdown, but we're listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what's good to eat in this town right this very second.
