Taste Talks

"Mario [Batali] asked me to this, and my general rule is, if Mario asks me to do something, I say yes," chef Danny Bowien of Mission Chinese and Mission Cantina explained of his turn as master of ceremonies and curation for the upcoming Taste Talks event in Brooklyn, September 12-14. "April wasn't available," he remarked, referring to last year's curator, chef April Bloomfield. "I guess I'm runner-up."

From June 1 through June 10, EAT (RED). DRINK (RED). SAVE LIVES is teaming up with chefs, restaurants, bars, and food trucks to fight AIDS and raise money for the medications that keep HIV patients alive and prevent transfer of the virus to babies in utero. Food and drink vendors all over the world will join the effort by designating items on their menu as (RED) or by serving (RED) drinks with a specially designed bottle of (BELVEDERE)RED vodka, and they'll donate a portion of the proceeds from those items to the campaign.

But while this is a global effort, it's being headed up by a pair of New Yorkers: Chef Mario Batali is using his restaurants and public influence to lead the charge, and meat purveyor Pat LaFrieda is offering 50 percent off of three LaFrieda meat products to encourage restaurants to make (RED) dishes and donate the proceeds. Both attended a launch event last night at Batali's restaurant OTTO Enoteca Pizzeria (1 Fifth Ave, 212-995-9559), and they were accompanied by the CEO of (RED), Deborah Dugan.

Having difficulty finding a food truck you like? Four Wheel Foodie, a new app, aims to solve that problem.
You've finally found it! A food truck that serves that combination of Laotian and Greek food you've been so desperately seeking is here! It's been parked in the same spot for two days in a row, and while you missed it both days, you're banking that the third time will be a charm. You've checked the latest Twitter update, rescheduled your 12 o'clock, and placed your running shoes neatly beside your desk. Making your way down the escalator, you begin to salivate with the excitement that comes with checking out a highly recommended cuisine. You've made your way out of the lobby and across the street, and you head to where a crowd is assembled. But as you arrive at your intended destination, you realize the trademark blue and red truck with a smiling goat in the middle is gone... an RV hawking fresh camp fire-cooked food is parked in its place.
