Bees without Borders

At the Union Square greenmarket last week, I met Andrew Coté, of Andrew's Local Honey.
Andrew raises bees in Westchester and Fairfield counties, and he's a new addition to the greenmarket. His honey is delicious, especially the dark, almost bitter buckwheat variety, which is especially good on blue cheese. Andrew's double life, after the jump.

It turns out that for the past six years Andrew has traveled to Iraq, India, Nigeria and Guatemala to teach beekeeping, which provides otherwise impoverished people with honey, a cash crop. He's been doing it on his own dime, but now he's starting a non-profit called Bees without Borders to help fund his program in Cuba and the Ukraine.

Stop by the Union Square greenmarket March 19th and April 2 to ask Andrew about the project, and to taste his honey.
