West Virginia Primary Special: Golden Delicious

I'm sure there's plenty of good food to be had in West Virginia (Check out this gorgeous slice of pie on Road Food, for one thing), but does a distinctively West Virginian food exist? If it does, I can't find it. What's up, West Virginia? No hidden food gems, à la the pork tenderloin sandwich from Indiana?

The most illustrious food contribution West Virginia has made to our fair country seems to be the Golden Delicious apple. Not a sexy find, I grant you.

You can read the facinating account of the discovery of the Golden Delicious in this 1962 West Virginia Daily Mail article.

And, finally, in honor of West Virginia's primaries-of-no-consquence today, here's a recipe for apple butter.

What about ramps?
Anybody who's a West Virginian
knows that springtime in West
Virginia means ramps--fixed a
variety of ways.
