Catherine's Caffe Opens in Fort Greene

There's a new addition to Fort Greene's "restaurant row," aka DeKalb Avenue, this week. It's a bright, homey little spot called Catherine's Caffe that opened yesterday. Owner Hank Lipowczan has been working construction in the area for years, loves the friendly residents, and says its "always been a dream to open a coffee shop." The menu features pastries, extensive hot breakfast options, sandwiches, salads, and two favorites from Lipozcan'z native Czech Republic: Beef Goulash and Chicken Schnitzel. His mother, Anna, will be the chef for those two specialties.

On the pastry shelf, there are beautiful French and Polish options. The French pastries come from the wonderful Choice Market in nearby Clinton Hill, while the Polish treats, like Cheese Babka, come from Greenpoint's Syrena.

Interestingly enough, the cafe was originally to be called Catherine Deneuve, but the French actress wouldn't allow it. Now, "the place has nothing to do with her," says Lipowczan, but there will be still be some amazing French croissants. No WiFi, yet, but it's coming soon.
