Beer in a Bag--Behold, The (Sustainable?) CarboPouch

Beer bottles and cans are a hassle to carry, right? Introducing, beer in a pouch. Trading on the buzz word of sustainability, The Beverage Pouch Group claims that its portable single-serve StandUp drink pouches are better for the environment than bottles or cans. But TreeHugger points out that were the pouches to catch on, there would be fewer reusable bottles for homebrewers to use. Oh, and the pouches can't be recycled so must be incinerated after use.

Upon further research, however, we discovered the 16-oz Single45 format of CarboPouch. Isn't transporting it cheaper and lower on gas emissions than transporting glass 45s? And isn't transport the biggest part of the beverage industry's carbon footprint? Depending on how the pouches get trashed, the sustainable claim may not be so far-fetched. Correct us if we're wrong. (No, really, please do!)

lk says:

Do you drink it like a CapriSun with a straw or turn it upside down and drink from the wide screw-top end? If the latter, does it hold its shape while you drink? It looks like a good idea, I'm just confused about the logistics!

Chantal Martineau says:

Good question, lk. Looks like you unscrew the cap, which is supposed to keep the bubbles of the carbonated beer intact. We haven't gotten a sample of it yet to try, but the second we do we'll let you know for sure!

lk brings up an excellent point. (I like you!) I think it has potential. http://www.flickr.com/photos/katemalay/1553649766/ (I was fake-passed-out. I was actually passed out about 4 minutes later.)

Angie says:

And, since not all of us drink just a few at a time...seems like this would get squeezed out all over the place when you're even a wee bit tipsy.

Maybe they can market a holder for it that's a one time purchase, and bars could have their own as well. If the beer sacks catch on, there's a boatload of marketing potention in holder gadgets. We are a gadget-loving society.

Sean says:

I'm sure you remove the cap to consume. Drinking beer out of a straw is a really, really bad idea, unless the objective is to recite the whole alphabet in a single belch.

You can use it as a condom when your done drinking!

seems to have good potential for bypassing no cans/bottles restrictions at some venues. Also seems easier to avoid detection in bag searches.

Elizah Leigh says:

Are plastic bags containing beer more eco-friendly than bottles containing the same buzz-worthy brew? I think not. Plastic is a pox on the environment, plain and simple. There is a reason why an entire global society is attempting to phase it out altogether. I may be a bit more opinionated on the subject than most considering that I'm a member of an online green social network (www.greenwala.com) and go above and beyond the call of duty to do the "green" thing...but seriously, Beer On The Go deserves a huge thumbs down for their ignorant marketing pitch. I really hope that greenies and in betweenies agree.

Chantal Martineau says:

@Elizah Leigh: Thanks for bringing the conversation back to where I'd started it (not that I didn't enjoy that suggestion for using the pouches to sneak beer into no-bottle venues).

Yes, plastic is a pox. But what about the cost of transporting glass? Aren't gas emissions the biggest part of the beverage industry's carbon footprint? Does one outweigh the other? Also, did you see my post on boxed wine (http://blogs.villagevoice.com/forkintheroad/archives/2009/06/yellowbluegreen.php) - Tetra-Pak is hard to recycle, I hear.
