At an impromptu fundraiser at Bobo on Tuesday night, a mariachi band played, while tequila cocktails were poured and bottles of tequila were raffled off. A certain food blog you know and love managed to win itself some Milagro reposado.

The event's aim was to raise money for neighbor PS 41's green roof project, which has become a pet cause for owner Carlos Suarez.

Suarez, who has made waves for his $1 water charge (proceeds have gone to, among other things, building a well in Ethiopia), was introduced to the GELL (Green Roof Environmental Literacy Laboratory) project last year when he was looking to become involved in a school food program, and to build a green roof. The restaurant has a small garden growing herbs and tomatoes out back, but Suarez wants to expand it to a roof.

He has hosted several fundraising events for the PS 41 project in the past and hopes to launch his latest initiative in the coming weeks. The Summer of Green Roof Goodness will involve reaching out to other restaurants about raising funds or just awareness about the project in whatever way they can, be it by posting a flyer or creating a Green Roof Cocktail. At Bobo, one of the salads will be renamed the Green Roof Salad, and $1 from each one will go toward the PS 41 green roof.

The GELL project is a 20,000-square-foot learning lab planned for the roof of PS 41, where kids can conduct experiments and grow fresh produce. "School food is not up to scratch," says Suarez. "I hope [these types of projects] can lead to improving kids' diets."
