Our Ten Best--Tacos

Rough-hewn corn tortillas constitute our connection with Mexico's remote past, when women slaked tiny ears of corn with lye procured from blackened seashells to make masa. To put in those tortillas, they made chile-rich sauces, while their husbands sojourned in search of wild boar, crunchy insects, armadillos, and iguana to make the fillings.

Two decades ago, the city's only chance to sample these world-class tacos came at several removes: our only Mexican food was an inherited version of Tex-Mex, which substituted flour tortillas for corn, ground beef for wild boar, and Velveeta-type cheese for the queso blanco of Oaxaca.

Then the Great Migration occurred, in which tens of thousands of citizens from southern Mexican states like Puebla and Guerrero came north, and formed the backbone of the city's burgeoning restaurant industry. In small cafes they created for themselves, they struggled to recreate the cuisine brought from home, using newly imported ingredients, and it became one of their many gifts to all New Yorkers.

PeeJay, errr I mean Chupa Cabra -- did you miss #6 on the list? And did you miss this part at the end: "Don't see your favorite taco on this list? Please tell us about it."

Danny says:

Yoooo, I saw the El Idolo truck open on 8th and 14th during the day... it was around 1pm. At night they're at West 3rd street I think, unless they have more than one truck, in which case I dunno if they're in more than one location.

Robert SietsemaAuthor Profile Page says:

Now that you mention it, they must have more than one truck. While one was at 8th Avenue, I saw another in Corona. Now we have to figure out how to distinguish between them.

Joe MacBu says:

Could you list the specific carne that's good at each place? Invariably, most joints will prepare certain meats a lot better than other ones. A favorite for exquisite tacos al pastor would be most welcome.

Robert SietsemaAuthor Profile Page says:

The best place for that, Joe, is Tacontento in Corona--every evening they push a big griddle out onto the sidewalk and do a mess of al pastor. it's really good, and it's there signature taco.

The truck that parks everyday on 116th bet 3rd and Lex has the best tacos in East Harlem..even better than La Casa de los Tacos. If you ever find yourself in this hood after 4:00 pm give it a try. Taxo Mix on 116th bet 2nd and 3rd is also quite good.

Cool, thanks. A friend in L.A. told me he read an article in the L.A. Times about a taco vendor on 116th betweetn Lex and 3rd that came from Oaxaca. I looked a couple of times but couldn't find him. The tacos were great on that block, though.

Dave says:

Did you try any of the taco stands in front of the Roosevelt ave station? Most are not great but I think the one that is only there at night has a pretty great lengua.

Love those taco stands, mainly because they're so convenient, but I feel sad making a choice. The other vendors look at me as if to say, "Why didn't you pick me?" Tacos Morelos is my fave stand anyway, but it's 20 blocks up Roosevelt.

marthagrace says:

I agree that the list needs more Sunset Park - and while I like Xochimilco, I don't think it's the best in the neighborhood by a long shot. Hope you can try these in the near future:

1. The lengua at Tacos Matamoros (the rest of theirs aren't bad, either) - 5th ave & 45th

2. The carnitas at Piaxtla es Mexico (sometimes mistakenly called Ricos Tacos) - 51st & 5th ave

3. The al pastor at Flor de Piaxtla - it's missing pineapple, and seems more like carne enchilada than al pastor, but it's tender and delicious. 5th ave & 42nd

4. The chorizo at Tacos el Bronco (a truck at 5th ave and 43rd, open usually from 8 pm till late). I don't know how this chorizo is better than everyone else's but it is, and you'll usually get a bonus grilled spring onion on your plate.

Thanks for the list, marthagrace, have definitely enjoyed the tacos at Flor de Piaxtla, but will check out the others. Definitely never seen that truck before...

What a great list. I also like Tacos el Bronco quite a bit. I think I remember liking the chorizo the best. I wrote about it as part of this article on Sunset Park nighttime street vendors:

I'm surprised that you didn't list any taco places in Elmhurst or Jackson Heights! Try the taco cart on the corner or Roosevelt Ave & Baxter Ave in front of the Sovereign Bank. Their tacos are the bomb!!!

I think the best tacos are the ones at 3am. With more substance than a White Castle, taco carts are at their best when you are tired, hungry, poor and no more options in life. Tacos.

Taqueria Coatzingo, Jackson Heights (76-05 Roosevelt Ave.)

Get the al pastor, it's terrific. I had it as a platter (I can assemble my own tacos) and even the rice side order was tasty. It's also open LATE.

How bout Super Taco - they're a truck operation that parks every night at 96th & Broadway. I'm no expert, but had it last night and it was pretty darn good.

Don't forget Soho, those white boys at Calexico taco cart kick ass, and La Esquina whips up some good tacos. I found these to be better and more filling than Pinche Taqueria.

My favorite place is Tulcingo, on 5th ave near 5th St. in Sunset Park.

tacomaster says:

La Superior RULES!! i think they have the best quality in their tacos by miles.
I just don't get why Pinche Taqueria is in the list, I think is pretty lame and El Idolo could be the worst on the list. It makes the article weak. Those are really bad, lack of taste from Mr. Sietsema.
Other than that is good.
Happy taco day!!
