Our Ten Best--Pizzas

New York City boasts the best pizza in the world. Period. But which ones to choose for Our Ten Best? There are so many kinds: We've got thin Neapolitan slices, and thick Sicilian slices, with Staten Island slices in between. We've got individual pies, and gang-size pies. We've got clam pies, and ziti pies, and pies with no tomato sauce at all. We've got deep dish Chicago-style, and cracker-thin Roman style, too. We've got neighborhood parlors galore in all five boroughs, where the pizza is nothing special, but we crave their pizzas anyway. We've got brick-oven pies, wood-oven pies, coal-oven pies, and pies that come from conventional ovens. We've got double-crust stuffed pies, calzones wishing they were pies, and pies littered only with potatoes, mushrooms, or zucchini and nothing else save a few twigs of rosemary. We've got pies given away free in bars, and pies so expensive that we can barely afford them. Finally, we have pies that pretend to be the true pies of Naples. One assertion has never been open to question: No food is more native to New York than pizza.

When I first moved to NY, everyone on campus was all about John's. Lately, no one talks about John's. It's cool to see it made your list!

You need to get to New Hyde Park, like pronto -- Umberto's.

Hey, I love Umberto's big square pies--I've even detoured on the way to LaGuardia in a rental car to grab some pizza there before a flight. But, alas, it's not in New York City.

Thanks, Mikey. We love John's, and, as you can see, we definitely favor the old-time coal oven spots--that's where the pizza was first developed that New York gave to the world.

I dont get the DiFara infatuation, yes its a good pizza but I walk out of the place smelling like a pile of grease and generally it is just too greasy. But you should consider Luzzo, I also like Mezzaluna. But my fave, thoug a pain to get to is Amano!!!

anyone who would put lombardi's on a top ten list is clearly not a native new york pizza eater.

Posted On: Friday, Jun. 19 2009 @ 10:18AM
Robert SietsemaAuthor Profile Page says:

Hey, nygirl, don't quite understand why you'd say that. Lombardi's is the city's oldest pizzeria and the place where pizza as we know it was invented. We agree it's not the best coal oven place, but have you ever tried their clam pie when it was "on"?

I live by La Villa and am slightly shocked to see it here. Haven't you ever had L'Asso's pizza? Shorter line than Lombardi's, and just plain better. The way the cheese tastes...Ah.

Where is L'Asso? -- a rather unfortunate name, don't you think?

Posted On: Friday, Jun. 19 2009 @ 10:31AM

Completely unfortunate, in so many ways. Its on Kenmare and Mott. Get their Margarita DOC, and then whatever else, but that is the real beauty there.

E says:

Sietsema,
I understand the sentimental need to put Lombardis on the list, but they are far more often off than on... to put them on the list allows them to rest on their laurels, no? somebody's got to shake them a bit! they seriously need to get on the quality control...
while they may have invented pizza as we know it, Totonno's does a much better job of honoring that legacy. Over all though its a great list... I just looked over Alan Richman's list, and aside from some general problems with it, I realized he included not one place that even offers pizza by the slice! Thank you for making a good list w/o the elitism of some others.

Haha buzzboy -- you're a devotee of the carpetbagging "True Pizza of Naples"! We tried Keste (read Sarah's review), and it definitely didn't make the cut. They can't control their oven, maybe they'll be able to someday, but the crust is not up to par, and certainly doesn't deserve to be compared to the excellent pies in Naples like Da Michele. We did name-check in the runners-up the first "True Pie of Naples" place -- La Pizza Fresca, which is one of the best in the city.

surely the square at L&B Spumoni Gardens in Bklyn deserves at least a runner-up mention

Posted On: Friday, Jun. 19 2009 @ 11:19AM
Robert SietsemaAuthor Profile Page says:

Hi Surly -- I love that place, but as you're no doubt aware, their style is to undercook the sheets (which is what they call pies, of course), so that right underneath the crust there's a gooey layer something like cookie dough. The locals love it, but I just think--undercooked, undercooked, undercooked. That said, I hang out there all the time, just for the spumoni, and for the scene. Hope to run into you there!

Being a resident of East Harlem I was happy to see you included Patsy's. Not to be a homey but I believe it is one of the truly great pizzas in NYC. Glad you omitted Artichoke..went recently and found it to be a greasy, oily, tasteless mess.

Posted On: Friday, Jun. 19 2009 @ 11:31AM
Robert SietsemaAuthor Profile Page says:

Hey, we think alike, Jay. Also had the same opinion of Artichoke, and hated that they had boxes of real artichokes sitting around, but used canned on their vaunted artichoke slice, which was covered with something that seemed like Campbell's Cream of Artichoke soup.

What, no Lucali?

Posted On: Friday, Jun. 19 2009 @ 11:58AM

I find the Artichoke experience very confusing. I have tried all of the options and only enjoyed the Sicilian (which I loved). In four visits, I have never heard anyone order the Sicilian, and almost all go for the lame artichoke slice, which reminded me of old school artichoke and spinach dips. Who is pushing that slice?
Does anyone have any recommendations in Lower East Side/East Village area, other than Lil' Frankies?

Glad to see La Pizza Fresca mentioned, a thoroughly underrated place that rarely gets mentioned in these kind of lists. Also, Queens is shut out here; was Nick's Pizza in Forest Hills in the running? That's our fav pizza joint near us.

Eric -- I've always been a fan of Stromboli's at the corner of First Avenue and St. Marks. It's where all the East Village rockers used to hang out during the Sonic Youth era. The sauce is a little on the sweet side, but if you're really really hungry, that amps your blood sugar almost immediately...

Patsy's on University Place is also good for a sit-down pie, but it's not nearly as good as the original Patsy's up in East Harlem.

I'm sorry but this list has a few real head scratchers!!! It is just so typical. I know it is opinions but come on?Do some of these names have to be here just for the sake of it??? Totonnos is the real deal,Difara is overrated and greasy,Patsy's is beyond overrated and is just a decent pie. I'm appalled to see Lombardis on here all it is is a tourist hotspot. Their crust has no body the pizza is flavorless,I truly think there are between 50 and 100 better places than Lombardis. The rest of the list can't be argued but how can you not have Keste???How can you not have Arturo's??? Let's' go people!!!Ok I'm calm now.

Robert, out of curiosity, did you actually visit (or re-visit) the places on your list for its publication, or did you do it from memory? I'm very surprised to see John's on your list, as they haven't made an interesting or properly cooked pie in years. More like a blander, soggier version of Grimaldi's. Surely, they deserve a mention for sentiment, but not for their pizza...at least not in this decade. Similarly, it would be interesting to note which other places you visited and DIDN'T include. For example, is Una Pizza Napoletana excluded because you didn't like it or because you didn't visit it? (NB: this shouldn't be seen as a push for Una Pizza on my part, as I've never been. It was just an example.)

Keste in the Village, Village Voice, is fabulous and fresh. And Franny's on Flatbush is better than anything I've had in Brooklyn.

Posted On: Friday, Jun. 19 2009 @ 6:35PM
Robert SietsemaAuthor Profile Page says:

I happen to have visited John's twice in the last two months, and found it fantastic both times, and I like it marginally better than Grimaldi's, which has embroidered on the coal oven formula by cooking at lower temps, using a thicker dough platform, and a thicker strew of ingredients. Yes, the old coal oven places are austere in the extreme, almost acetic, but then so is Keste and all the Naples wannabe pies, which are frankly not in the same league as the actual Naples places. What do you like about Keske anyway? Like I said, I don't believe they've learned to control their wood-burning oven yet. I'll revisit in a couple of months, but I was unimpressed with my first visit, and Sarah DiGregorio was underimpressed in three visits. We both found the dough soggy. Those real Naples places have been using the same starter for decades, too, and that's one of the things that makes their pita-like pies so spectacular.

Are you sure "shocked" is the word you want to use, instead of "mildly annoyed"? Lucali's is good but uneven, it might have easily made the runner-up list; Una Pizza Napolitana is not nearly as good as La Pizza Fresca, though it sets out to do just about the same thing.

Hi Bob,

I can really appreciate your list as it mentions some great places. Unfortunately, most of these are pie places and don't truly represent what New Yorkers eat on a daily basis. Moreover, with the recession in full swing we really need to focus more on great NY slice places. You don't have to spend 12-15 dollars to get great Pizza in NY if you know where to go. That said, I really think NY Pizza Suprema by MSG should have been mentioned. They put out some fantastic regular slices for $2.50. Their upside down pizza (L & B style) isn't doughy and undercooked like L&B and is absolutely delicious -- a favorite of Ed Levine. You really need to check them out. The son of the original owner, a super friendly guy, took over a couple of years ago, and recently gave the place a makeover. You really should check them out. On a different note, I was really glad to see you gave Krispy a mention in the runner up section. They make delicious traditional NY style Pizza by the slice.

Hey Robert i was brought up in brooklyn and moved to long island when i was 20 years old, i still goto new york and brooklyn to some of my favorite pizza places, but i have to tell u there are three spots on long island, thats worth the trip too, and this is from someone thats been eating pizza from homemade to the best for 59 years, im a hard marker coming from a sicilian family that knows there way around the oven. Try the sicilian pie at umbertos of new hyde park i rate that up there, also pizza town on 109 in west babylon, and third ciros in hauppauge all from long island i rate those three up there.

Hey Robert, this top ten list is fantastic. You make me miss New York style pizzas, they are just not the same here in California. Denino's would be my pick for #1, although I haven't had a chance to try half of your picks on this list. You can post this to our site http://www.toptentopten.com/ and link back to your site. We are trying to create a directory for top ten lists where people can find your site. The coolest feature is you can let other people vote on the rankings of your list.

Thanks, Vince, love Denino's, especially the conch (scungilli) salad and the clam pie, which is a real New Yorky thing.

You guys have to be kidding me with this list.

No Lucali? Seriously? Lil Frankies, Motorino and Roberta's shouldn't even be in consideration.

Are you basing this on ad revenue or what?

Maffei's on 6th beats those shmoes with it's grandma slice alone. I'd even put Two Boots above Little Frankies. While I'm name checking let me also say R.I.P. S. Cono's of Graham Ave. Best eggplant slice ever.

Do you see ads from those places in the Voice? We have been strong advocates of both Maffei's and Cono's (the pizza place, not the seafood restaurant) for ages, if you would get off your ass, Anonymous, and Google a bit, rather than sitting in your own filth and making baseless accusations.

I'm pleased to see Roberta's on the list. I tried them a few months after they opened and felt that they had promise but the crust was a bit too crispy and lacked adequate character. Six months later I revisited and they had it nailed. Very very good.

I don't know about you, but I'm not hopping on the train for 45 minutes just to get pizza from a restaurant with an hour-long line for a table, I don't care how good it is. Seriously, all of these lists are the same fluff, mostly the same expected expensive, touristy places.

Real people sometimes get the best pizza in their own neighborhood, real people sometimes get pizza by the slice, and god forbid--real people sometimes get pizza made in a gas oven.

I'd love to see a top ten *regular-person's* pizzeria list. I'm sick of the tourist-centric/"don't have a day job" pizzeria lists that are full of places I'd likely never go to. Isn't there a recession going on, anyway?

GiorgioNYC says:

No, NYC does not have the best pizza in the world. Please stop making such ignorant and demonstrably false comments. I can take you to places in Napoli & environs that would put that nonsense to rest. And Keste, which I finally got around to last week, is superb. (By the way, Time Out New York's pizza round-up, which had Keste at #1, was far more credible than yours.) The Regina Margherita, made with imported cilegini tomatoes and mozzarella di bufala, is not to be missed. Roberto is a great pizzaiolo, period. He can't regulate his oven? You really don't now what you're talking about. The crust was perfection -- chewy, tasty, totally Neapolitan in style, not thin and burnt as too often is the case in NYC. If the presence of Chinese in a Chinese restaurant can be taken as a sign of quality, then the fact that Keste's clientele is heavily Italian (not Italian American) should tell you something. The young Italian-speaking man & woman at the table next to ours were raving over their pizza, expressing surprise that something so good and yes, authentic, could be found in NYC. If you prefer NYC-style pizza, fine, just say that. But basta with this bullshit about New York having better pizza than Italy.

Don't be put off by the shopping-mall appearance of the premises. And the back garden is great. Good cheap wines from Central Italy, too. What's your problem with the place, Avisualperson?

I got a fantastic pie from Patsy's original location last summer when visiting. It was less than 10 minutes from ordering to the table and cost only $13 for a huge pie. Lombardi's on the other hand, was overrated. Sally's in New Haven is my favorite, but the service is THE WORST!

Akilesh says:

Fascinating debate. Here's my view of the list:

Totonno's - thought it was boring and somewhat insubstantial
Di Fara's - can be very good, can be overly greasy. A certain kind of over-the-topness
John's - delicious and satisfying
Grimaldi's - fantastic and consistently pizza that makes me very happy
Patsy's East Harlem - delicious -- but only if you order the whole pie, not the slices
Lombardi's - tasty and solid
Motorino - thought it was a nice try but nothing special.

My list would be:
Franny's - transcendent crust and perfect balance
Grimaldi's
Sicilian at Lazzara's - wonderful sauce
Sicilian at Artichoke - love that charred crust!
Zero Otto Nove in the Bronx - very high-quality neopolitan
Keste - ditto
Pizza Moto at the Brooklyn Flea - ditto once more. fresh from their oven, hot on your hands, it's amazing.
L&B Spumoni - simple and rustic, but addictive

I have been in the food industry for 30 years.
I had been ask to design a pizza restaurant for a client about 3 weeks ago. When he gave me his menu, I thought he was nuts. I am am very fortune t consultant, I pick and choose what I work on. I almost bailed on him when he brought me to a place in NJ that I will not mention (awful) & soupy. This was one of the first stores of this style pie with this unusual dough w/the ?? very best ingredients.

Well today I jumped in with both feet. Even discounting his fee and following through with extra's like I was doing a 4 star rest. Like Lever House or Savona, for he brought me to Keste. Great no conforming pizza and dough.

A must try.

There are clearly too many debatable pizza places in town and most of them reside in Brooklyn then Manhattan then Staten Island.
How about a Top 5 List for the other boroughs which never seem to make the cut.
Top 5 Bronx Pizza
Top 5 Queens Pizza
Top 2 Staten Island Pizza (lol)
Top 10 Brooklyn Pizza
Top 10 Manhattan Pizza

Top 10 suburb/off the beaten path pizza (Westchester & Long Island.. New Haven?)

I think there will be a lot more grateful pizza-eaters out there. This is New York and I'm sure not everyone will be happy but at least people who arent trying to trek across 3 or 4 boroughs will be able to find top quality eats within local proximity.
