Tales From 'Tales': Get Ready for the Vodka Backlash Backlash

Fork in the Road has hit the cocktail trail at Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans, from which regular dispatches will be posted this week.

Vodka is dead, or at least has peaked, say the experts.

Among cocktail connoisseurs, poo-pooing vodka has become a popular sport. And, why not, when the spirit gave us such abominations as the Appletini and the Fuzzy Navel.

Now, of all people to stand up for the odorless and flavorless liquid, Jim Meehan--of bacon-infused, bourbon-peddling PDT--says that vodka hating is as passe as many claim vodka itself to be.

"Drinking is like fashion," according to Meehan. "You might think those stone-washed jeans aren't that hot now, but just wait until Yves Saint Laurent comes out with a stone-washed miniskirt. Everyone will want it."

On a recent trip to Sweden, Meehan had the opportunity to experience a different vodka culture, one tied to the food of that place, such as the staples of gravlax and salt cod. With strongly flavored foods, one needs a strong spirit to clean the palate, he explains, and vodka is the ideal pairing for such foods.

"Am I ready to buckle and put vodka cocktails on the menu [at PDT]? Not yet. But I do think we need to bring vodka back into the fold," Meehan says.

Were he to make that leap, he would likely start with Karlsson GOLD, a Swedish brand that not only distills its vodka just once--as opposed to the multiple distillations touted by other vodka makers--but also makes single-farm, single-variety vintage bottlings (not available for purchase at this time). That means you can drink a 2004 Solist or a 2006 Gammel Svensk Rod (those are potato varieties, by the way). He also likes Sobieski, which costs just $11, much less than most "luxury" brands.

"Vodka doesn't need my help yet, but when it does," he says, "I'll help."

And to all those vodka haters out there: "If you close yourself off, you become obsolete. You have to stay open-minded. Opinionated and knowledgeable, but open."

Kate says:

Pucker might be the Ugg boots of spirits, and vodka-soda drinkers might be the ones who wear those (in summer, with acid wash denim mini-skirts), but I'm surprised vodka's losing respect! Anyone who needs reassurance that vodka can, in fact, grow hair on one's chest needs to visit the Russian Samovar right now and order a carafe of the pepper.

Liz says:

I don't think a vodka & soda will ever be truly obsolete. It makes a great neutral beverage for people who don't want to exist in a diabetic coma all night from drinking French 75's, Mojitos, a new school Sidecar, and anything and everything made with either simple syrup or previously defunct liqueurs. A good vodka & soda with a lime squeeze if you will be drinking during a long social event, or a dry vodka martini to start a Friday evening will always be a viable option, more akin to wearing Stuart Weitzman patent leather pumos than Ugg boots.

@Kate: I agree. Anyone who has been to vodka country (Russia, Poland, etc.) knows that vodka isn't for the birds. Especially when you drink it straight. And for lunch. Personally, I like a potato vodka, something not over-distilled so that it maintains an essence of the base ingredient.

rsietsema says:

Of course the liquor companies want to perpetually hype vodka--it has no flavor of its own, and it's the easiest to make, store, and peddle. As any chemistry major knows, you can get the world's best vodka by diluting absolute alchohol, forget about all the "secret processes" used by manufacturers. It's the training bra of spirits, and of course mixologists like it, because there's no flavor to get in the way of them "infusing" it. But the Russians explored every pathway in that regard centuries ago...

Chantal Martineau says:

@rsietsema: Yes, most vodkas are just a product of marketing (Grey Goose, I'm looking at you). But I think Jim Meehan's point - and I agree with him as I've been to vodka country - is that bartenders and drink snobs who write off vodka as a pussy drink have probably only been exposed to heavily marketed brands. You have to drink a glass of homemade potato vodka with a meal of sausage and potatoes to appreciate that what most American bars carry has nothing to do with what the spirit was originally about. Then again, I've done my fair share of vodka bashing because most people here DO drink it in terrible drinks.

Never had any vodka made with actual potatoes, as it was originally done. The Irish half of me is thrilled!

Maybe the three of us should get some potato vodkas together and do a tasting?

The prices of fish oil products has risen significantly. I am giving my son 2 capsules a day to help him with memory. Does anybody know where I an find an cheap solution? By the way, it is great. His grade went up 2 points after consuming fish oil capsules.
