Our 10 Best Wine Shops in NYC (and NJ)

Some wine shops go crazy with the signage, as with this European vineyard vehicle parked in front of the Seaport's Pasanella & Son. But will it make our top 10?

What does Fork in the Road look for in a wine store? A broad selection of wines, from France, Italy, Spain, and California; smaller selections from such further-flung locales as Oregon, South Africa, Chile, Austria, and Australia; quirky, surprising choices from places like Hungary, Morocco, Canada, and even Mexico; and vintages from the Finger Lakes, Hudson Valley, and Long Island, making it possible to savor our own terroir; a vigorous $10 and under section, loaded with wines that you might expect to pay twice as much for elsewhere; knowledgeable salespeople who don't try to upsell you, and have as much enthusiasm for cheaper wines as for more expensive ones; easy availability of wine reference materials to examine on the premises; and, finally, a computer system that allows counterpeople to recall the bottles you've glugged in the past.

DSC07982v.jpg

Some stores specialize in the wines of a single country, including Tinto Fino in the East Village.

These same principals apply to wine stores that specialize in one or two countries, or even a few regions within those countries. Above all, we desire reasonable prices--and wine store owners should realize that it's easy today to check Internet prices and make comparisons.

We haunt the wines stores daily, looking for good deals and interesting bottles, but we're sure there are places that we've missed. Accordingly, we'll compile a list of your suggestions, and feature it on the last page of this post. So, pour yourself a glass of chardonnay, slouch in your computer chair, and enjoy our list.

I see you've once again skipped over Trader Joe again. :)

I really hate two-buck chuck. I've thoroughly enjoyed really cheap wines before, but those are just too thin and weird. I'm putting it on the reader rex page, unless you're teasing me!

What, no Thirst? No Wine Therapy? These are two of my faves, who mostly stock super-small producers.

of course I'm just teasing ya. I would rather learn more about specialty/mom and pop stores than these giants. I'm all for individual businesses.

Thanks, cmartineau, I'm adding them to the suggestions list (and checking them out for myself, love the name Wine Therapy).

I'd add Chambers Street Wines. Good staff, good website. Heavily weighted to France and Italy. Hard to beat Chambers for French wine, low and high end, but not the place to go for "New World" wines.

There is more than Two-Buck Chuck to Trader Joe's wine. If you need help finding some of their winners perhaps my Trader Joe's Top 10 Wine List would be of use...

Posted On: Friday, Oct. 30 2009 @ 4:57PM
Robert SietsemaAuthor Profile Page says:

Thanks, jason, I have occasionally found bottles of wine I liked there at decent prices, but more commonly I've found a bottle of chianti that doesn't taste quite right, not corked exactly, but flinging off a weird flavor, or a chardonnay that's too sweet. I think they often buy up lots that have been rejected by wine tasters. But would love to have some guidance from you.

This top 10 list goes to 11! Thank you for the nice mention - please correct our address. The Brooklyn Greene Grape is at 765 Fulton. There's also a sister store at 55 Liberty in the Financial District of Manhattan. Cheers!

France says:

As expected, the best French wine stores can be found in France. They reveal the entire French culture, by the way they are organized, I think.

Posted On: Saturday, Oct. 31 2009 @ 10:00AM
Robert SietsemaAuthor Profile Page says:

We used to have a lot more French wine stores, France, before Italy revamped its wine program, and all the other nationalities came flooding into the U.S. Now, though we have stores that partly specialize in French wines, apart from the Burgundy Wine Company, we have nothing with the kind of depth and breadth you mention.

Some great smaller shops:

September Wines & Spirits (100 Stanton St)

Uva (199 Bedford Ave)

Dandelion Wine (153 Franklin in Greenpoint; beautiful space and really friendly vibe)

I agree with you re: Trader Joe's, but they're a reliable source for two everyday reds that I've come to love: Perrin Reserve Cotes Du Rhone and Goats Do Roam in Villages (I'm almost embarrassed to recommend something with such a jokey name, but it's very tasty).

Posted On: Saturday, Oct. 31 2009 @ 4:36PM
Robert SietsemaAuthor Profile Page says:

Definitely. agree on the Goats Do Roam -- it's featured on the bottom end of several good wine lists. Haven't tried the Cotes Du Rhone, but will head over on my bike to buy a bottle on Monday and check it out. Thanks.

Hope you enjoy it! Also, I hope they have it in stock. Whenever I've been it's always there, but TJ's can be maddening when it comes to consistency.

Haha -- Won't hold it against you if they're out.

Jackie says:

I have to second the Wine Therapy nomination. They have a great selection of specialty and organic wines at very fair prices and of course a great name. I did a lot of wine and chocolate pairings with them supplying the wine so Jean-Baptiste, the owner, is a bit of an expert on wines that pair well with chocolate.

Frank says:

Obviously you haven't traveled the extra 5 minutes to Wayne, NJ where everyone (now) knows is the best wine shop on the East Coast.

It was built from the ground up just over a year ago and no other wine shop in the area even comes close.

It's Gary's Wine & Marketplace of Wayne.

http://www.garyswine.com/local/wayne.html

The store is amazing, it's huge with a selection that will rival any wine shop in the country, not to mention the tasting bar, temperature controlled wine rooms, cheese selection and even craft beer.

I live in Wayne and have visited most of those other wine shops but they really don't come close to Gary's in Wayne.

Posted On: Monday, Nov. 2 2009 @ 10:24AM
rsietsema says:

Thanks, Frank. Do they have any particular specialization? That is a little out of our coverage area, but might be worth the trip. Weird that the url reads "gary swine" as well as "garys wine".

Even if I liked Trader Joe's, this article would probably keep me from going there. http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/05/18/090518fa_fact_goodyear

Robert SietsemaAuthor Profile Page says:

Thanks so much for the link, Cole. The writer, Dana Goodyear, is also the writer of the Jonathan Gold profile in this week's New Yorker. This piece about Two Buck Chuck shows why the wine regions need to be regulated the way they are in France and Italy, with varieties of wine designated and protected by the government. Then this charlatan can make all the swill he wants without harming the good wines that are carefully made.

I would have to disagree with the Greene Grape. Their suggestions are just not good.

huck says:

darn nice list but the idea that chambers st is not in top 3 much less the top ten weakens the whole deal for me. i clicked thru the article thinking oh good, it's not a runner up, oh good it's not in 6-10 so maybe it's #1......but no!

they have a great staff and good tastings but the real beauty is that they also have so many small producers and lesser known incredibly good and interesting wines. it's my first stop when wine shopping. check it out.

Haven't been there denamite, but am always in need of a place up that way to buy a bottle of wine (sometimes I bring white to a party, and it's nice to be able to get it cold and nearby, rather than drag it from my apartment). Thanks, I'm adding it to the readers' recommendations.

Delighted to see Central Avenue Wines in Jersey City on this list. It's my local shop so I stop in frequently and there are always surprises (right now I've been buying a 2002 Gloria Ferrer syrah for $12!).

Thanks, Robert. I love that place, and have found amazing bargains in Italian wines, including the stray Brunello. And I love riding up that weird little elevator from Hoboken, if I can't find someone to drive me to the Heights.
