The pocket of Brooklyn Heights located almost beneath the BQE is now home to the Iris Cafe, an airy, high-ceilinged place that opened yesterday on Columbia Place near Joralemon Street. It's one of several storefronts in the historic Riverside Apartment complex, many of which are empty. One of the cafe's three proprietors used to work at the River Cafe, while another has worked for Edible Brooklyn. A glimpse inside and a description of the menu follow on the next page.

The menu is composed largely of breakfast and lunch items. Breakfast features homemade whole milk yogurt; a breakfast baguette of boiled egg, cheddar, surryano ham, lettuce, and tomato; "Eggs & Soldier"; and the Iris Breakfast, two medium boiled eggs, sliced tomatoes, dill, and whole wheat toast.

The baguettes, priced from $7 to $8.50, include baked blue brie, surrayno ham, and walnut; Applewood smoked cheddar, cucumber, lettuce, tomato, and Dijon mayonnaise; and "proper" egg salad, tomato, lettuce, and Dijon mayonnaise. Lunch also includes salads and cheese plates. And, of course, there are numerous coffee beverages.
