I, Locavore: Pumpkin Whoopie Pie

pumpkinwhoopie.jpg
The whoopie pie, two cake-like chocolate cookies buffering a cream filling, is a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. The story goes that the treats got their exuberant name because Amish wives would place them in their husband's lunch boxes; when the men discovered them, they would shout "whoopie!"

One bite of this ridiculously delicious confection might make you shout "whoopie!" in the middle of Union Square. The pumpkin whoopie pies are baked by the people from Oak Grove Plantation, using their own pumpkins, and sold at the Union Square Greenmarket on Wednesdays. The spongy cake disks taste like pumpkin pie with raisins, and the filling is a dense, whipped, tangy cream cheese mixture.
