Just one more wafer-thin mint...

The human appetite, in all its voracious, messy, and metaphorical forms, is one of the cinema's more enduring themes. When food makes its way onto the screen, it's often less as a prop than as a narrative tool. How it's presented -- literally or symbolically, lovingly or with a measure of revulsion -- is itself commentary on the director's view of the general state of existence. And while we may canonize particular movies for making us drool at the sight of, say, Dover sole sizzling in butter or Albert Finney gnawing lasciviously on a drumstick, some of the best food movies dissect food rather than fetishize it. Food, Inc., for example, is unlikely to give you a hankering for genetically modified corn, but it will provide you with a measure of intellectual nourishment.

While there's pleasure to be found in honeyed shots of pretty people eating pretty things, movies that approach the subject from a more neurotic and uncomfortable place provide their own forms of satisfaction. It's entirely possible to be enthralled by the sight of Penelope Cruz in Woman on Top and yet still crave the darker delights of Eating Raoul. And there are plenty of films that, while not expressly about food, offer some of celluloid's most memorable commentaries on the subject: try thinking of 9 1/2 Weeks without thinking of Kim Basinger's refrigerator, or of Tom Jones without thinking of Albert Finney and his aforementioned drumstick. And then, of course, there's the matter of that wafer-thin mint.

Here then, in no particular order, are Our 10 Best movies in which food plays a starring role, or at least gives a substantial supporting turn. Undoubtedly, we've forgotten a few, so feel free to let us know what we've missed.

Chris says:

Tampopo is pure love. I just showed it to my 9-year old daughter (prudently skipping over what Pauline Kael called her favorite scene of joyous carnality) so I could share something so marbled with simple goodwill and affection.

"Everyone who eats noodles is an amateur"

Thanks for putting it at the top.

I just watched "Big Night" again for the tenth time, my mother's first time seeing it. Fab. You. Luss. Almost made Minnie Driver palatable. Um, almost.

Now will check out the ones I have not yet seen, mainly Tampopo! Thanks!

My Dinner With Andre is my all time fav, so is Eating Raoul. But where is Like Water for Chocolate? I admit, the book was WWWAAAAYYYY better, but the movie is food sensuality at its best. We all should copy a few of their recipes and dance in the funk of rose chocolate biscuits.

How about The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie - actually about a group of people who never get around to eating?

Catch the toilet/banquet scene at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgDfd7GUQHs.

How about Fellini Satyricon? More than one memorable food scene there.

Fairlington Blade says:

An interesting list. I keep wishing that Tampopo would be re-released as I hear about it, but it's difficult to find.

Eat Man Drink Woman is vastly overrated in my view. Great food porn, but the story? Meh.

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory is a great movie, though only tangentially about food. Gene Wilder was born to play Willie Wonka. I'd move Mostly Martha into the top 10 over it.

Fried Green Tomatoes deserves an honorable mention at the least.
