Kombucha Brooklyn Joins the Brews on Tap at Brouwerij Lane

Greenpoint beer shop Brouwerij Lane, known for its 150 varieties of bottle beer and 19 growler selections on tap, has branched out. Last week they added the locally brewed kombucha by Kombucha Brooklyn (known as KBBK) to their keg list, selling it for $2 a half-pint and $4 a pint in their in-house tasting area, and $12 for a 64-ounce growler to go (prices on par with fellow Brooklyn brews Sixpoint and Kelso).

The fermented product, which contains no alcohol but is thought to possess high quantities of probiotics, amino acids, and other healthy elements, had a trial run at the store back in October, and plans are now to keep pouring it indefinitely. "We look at it as recovery -- it's the opposite of beer, it's something that's going to help your liver," says employee Eric Olsen. He describes customer reaction so far as "surprised -- to have it coming from a wall of beer taps is surprising to people," but points out that it's moving about as fast as the beer.

The spot is currently pouring the Urban Passion (passion fruit) variety, but will rotate the five-gallon kegs among the brand's Red Ginger Root and Straight Up flavors as well. And if you can't make it out to Greenpoint, KBBK cofounder Rick Miller gives us the heads up that the brand will be pouring from specially designer "kegerators" at Urban Rustic and the Brooklyn Kitchen, coming soon.
