With the remnants of the nearby Domino Sugar Refinery in the background, a new kitchen incubator hopes to attract a crop of environmentally responsible entrepreneurs to the Williamsburg waterfront: Green Desk, which made its name by offering flexible work spaces to those tired of hopping on conference calls at local caf├ęs, just put out an ad specifically geared toward attracting food start-ups.

Meaty News: FDA Lifting Ban on Italian Cured Pork

Excellent news: Cured pork from small producers in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, and Piedmont could soon be available in the U.S.

The U.S. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services announced last week that the FDA plans to lift its ban by the end of May since the regions were found to be free of swine vesicular disease.

As the L.A. Times points out, the FDA has allowed products from large Italian plants which could afford to follow USDA regulations since 1989, but the new rule will clear the way for much smaller (and more exciting) regional producers to ship.

TaxiTreats is a concept that recently won the New York Economic Development Corporation's Next Idea Competition. The idea: to have built-in vending machines in taxicabs. Founder Brian Shimmerlik, a NYU graduate student who developed the concept alongside fellow student Tomas Grosskopf, was awarded $17,500 to fund the start-up.
