Kinder than Eat Skull, catchier than Jay Reatard, cleaner than No Age, Times New Viking is the everyman’s lo-fi band: probably too gross for labelmates New Pornographers, but still poppy enough to steal a few of their fans. Watch them peel the paint off the instillations at the Whitney and then take a breather with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble, who will be playing string quartets from American composer Jefferson Friedman. — CHRISTOPHER WEINGARTEN.
