Nikka Costa Tonight at the Bowery Ballroom
Her first stab at retro soul predated Winehouse et al, but never properly took hold. So Nikka Costa is back, now on the revived Stax imprint (sneaky!), giving it another shot in a more favorable climate. A big voice, though, couldn't save her from her reliance on affectations the first time around. Her slight flashes of hippiedom might only seem more anachronistic now that her throwback style is actually in vogue. — JON CARAMANICA
