George Clooney Endorses Sex Toy
With Burn After Reading, the new film by 2008 Oscar Best Picture winners Joel and Ethan Coen, opening in theaters tomorrow, it's time to ask an important question about one of the movie's stars. Does George Clooney have an endorsement deal with The Liberator Ramp? (So NSFW!)
I ask because last October a photo circulated the internet depicting Mr. Clooney emerging from a posh townhouse with a purple Liberator, a wedge shaped pillow that according to its manufacturer "strategically lifts your lover's hips to an altitude of 12 inches, offering access at critical angles that accentuate sensitivity." Predictably, gossip sites went nuts with this image ("I worked at an adult shop," said one commentator at Jezebel, "and we used to laugh at the Liberators, since they are $200 pillows, after all") while it was commonly reported that Clooney had been photographed leaving his own home. One story, citing only a "source," went so far as to claim that Clooney had turned to the device after he and his then-girlfriend were injured in a motorcycle accident last September ("supported elevation prevents falling forward, slipping, sore elbows and wrists and hips buried in the mattress," the Liberator's website boasts).
The problem with these speculations is that the photograph in question wasn't taken outside Clooney's home but on the set of Burn After Reading, in which the actor plays a horndog federal marshal with an abiding interest in sex toys. Clooney has long been an outspoken critic of the Gawker empire (which includes the aforementioned Jezebel) and he has to feel satisfied that those folks were among the credulous duped by old-fashioned viral marketing. Because, if you haven't already guessed, The Liberator Ramp is now being advertised as seen in Burn After Reading. —Benjamin Strong
