"I'm new at this book thing, so don't laugh at me," Juliana Hatfield said last night in a therapy/"Storytellers" session at Housing Works Bookstore.
CMJ isn't just where young fashion plates come to make their name; veterans, like Hatfield, use the moment to reinvent themselves, too. Last night, Hatfield had a book to promote: When I Grow Up: A Memoir. In it the songstress revisits familiar territory—her devastating relationships with rock stars, not exactly breaking news— but also gives a glimpse into her childhood and the tormented union between her parents.
Her set softly intertwined between songs—which included one from her newest release How To Walk Away, and her signature tune, "My Sister"—and monologues about other failed love affairs (yup, another rocker who left her for a model/ actress) and the depression she felt during the peak of her musical stardom, circa mid-‘90s.
