F.T.A., Hanoi Jane Are Back

Ever since its brief theatrical run in 1972, F.T.A. (coming soon to the IFC in a restored archival print) has almost never been seen. The documentary recorded the vaudeville antics of Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland, among other actors, who toured military towns around the U.S. and overseas to offer their support to troops who opposed the war. After its premiere, the film disappeared from theaters, never to be reissued again. Next Monday, Fonda promises to clear up the mystery: she'll be on hand after the screening to talk about the documentary and her involvement in it and perhaps explain why she has kept the film out of theaters until now. David Zeiger, director of the recent Vietnam documentary Sir! No Sir!, moderates the discussion, and a portion of the proceeds from the evening will benefit Iraq Veterans Against the War, a nonprofit organization that advocates for ending the war and for providing help to returning service members. Whether today's war veterans will take more kindly to the sight of Hollywood actresses gallivanting across various war zones attempting to undermine troop morale remains to be seen: Perhaps that could be somebody's first question?--Angela Ashman
