Updike's Uptown Crawl Recreated

An early Updike Talk of the Town piece saw the writer quixotically attempt to make his way between the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center without once setting foot on either 5th or 6th Avenue. He called it a "service to readers who are too frail or shy for good-natured hurly-burly," a thin excuse to scramble around the interior of city blocks but a kind of classic idea for a local color piece. In his honor, the New Yorker's Thessaly La Force and Eric Lach recreate the trip in 2009.
