On Young Dro's "On Fire"

To the list of goofy, outsized obsessions in the Grand Hustle camp, let us now officially add Polo--meaning the sport, the clothing you wear while you play the sport, and the heretofore unknown acronym that doubles as the title for Young Dro's forthcoming record, P.O.L.O. (Players Only Live Once). Dro's partner in crime, Yung LA, rocked the biggest Polo logo in human recorded history--the only other people to wear this particular line of Ralph Lauren are the ballboys at the U.S Open--at a recent VIBE- sponsored live concert. And it's LA who seems to provide the high-pitched backing vocal to the chorus of what will likely emerge as the closest thing to a title track on P.O.L.O., "On Fire," a big, airy, Jim Jonsin-produced anthem that just leaked this morning. All indications--the T.I.-sporting "Take Off," the not-that-great Akon feature "You Nasty," and maybe "Dro Rock Diamonds" and "Clean With It," unclear--point to this record being epic in scale, if not impact. Dro's an able student of his mentor, T.I., who's had a career breakthrough over the last couple years making similarly breezy-but-lyrical upper-register synth stuff. With any luck, Dro's up next.
