The Top 10 Records Sold Last Week at Kim's Video on First Avenue

In 2009, the traditional practice of exchanging physical copies of records for money is a trade that might best be called quixotic. But New Yorkers are stubborn people, and the record store is not dead. Below, the top ten records that actually sold in the last week at a store near you.

Before the store shipped the entirety of its 55,000 video collection off to Italy, Kim's Video had a reputation for being the most intimidating rental shop in the city. Opened by Youngman Kim on Avenue A in the mid-'80s, the store originally doubled as a dry cleaning/video rental shop. Along the way, it ditched the dry cleaning and expanded to include music. In 1987, Kim opened a massive two-floor location on St. Marks, which closed this past January, after the store's rental business faded. Kim's is now at a much smaller space, located at 124 First Avenue. And while it still carries a diverse collection of indie, rock, pop and reggae, the new Kim's is far more compact. "We needed less room so we decided to downsize," said employee Ned Hayden, 47. "You can see with the closing of the superstores, Virgin and everything, that business model isn't really working right now."
