Few things we love here more than Janelle Monae. Unfortunately our resident "space cowgirl" correspondent had his own event to attend, so Rebecca Smeyne went in his place to photograph the r&b superstar open for Erykah Badu, also no slouch to the strange-while-riveting live performer department. Pics from the Beach at Governors Island, a new 3000-capacity waterfront venue, below. Note to future concert-photogs: they physically escort you off the island after the first two songs. Boo.
