CBGB Celebrates Its Third Year of Helping John Varvatos Sell Clothing

• i wish i did a better job explaining why they had such a terrible booking ethos. i think i can explain now, being a little bit more on the other side of things. basically they let it become another one of the city's venues that puts seven unknown and often musically incompatible bands on one bill with the understanding that the friends of those seven unknown bands will come in for an hour during their friends set, pay a cover, drink two or three beers each, then leave. that kind of gig is worthless to a band, after a certain point. they would have done so much better--and it's a shame so few quality-act-getting venues do this anymore, i guess it's much easier to let the booking agencies just do your whole night for you as a package deal--if they booked the headliner, then filled in the opening slots with complementary local acts. but cbgb, which had such caceht, instead just kinda preyed on the fact that new and young bands need a place to play. they put themselves in with the desmond's taverns of the city

• JV probably books better shows than CBGBs did too...

• if varvatos didn't make such nice suits i would be livid about this post
