Brooklyn's up-and-coming percusso-punks Screens pound in harmony alongside Brooklyn vets Aa and recent YIMBY grads Dinowalrus, mixing pulverizing sturm und drum with giant mushy, smushy, whooshy hooks. The band is an all-star amalgem of similarly minded avant-party weirdo bands from all across the country: heavily reverbed vocalist Breck Brunson was from Washington D.C.'s perennially underrated chant-and-bounce keyb tweakers the Apes, guitarist Dan Tierney did time in the all-too-short run of San Francisco post-punk spazzes the Mall, and drummer Andy Becker laid down drums for D.C.'s spastic post-hardcore band the Medications. Like all bands, they eventually convened in Brooklyn to make a mess. "Saturdays" is merely a demo--one the band is quick to insist is light years away from the album version they're currently tracking--but still a great representation of their high-energy, trance-inducing live show. It's a lo-fi 90 second blast of mid-decade Liars texture-drumming with glorious sweeps of keyboard, expressionist vocal smears, and one gnarled post-punk coda. A band to watch if you're at all into watching noisy bands.

How did you create this demo?
Dan Tierney, keyboards/guitar: I track a lot of demos in my room. Usually in my underwear, with a Casio and guitar on my bed at the end of the day. Then I bring them into the studio to share with the guys, and we build on them from there. "Saturdays" has been evolving for a while, but finally found its groove recently--which unfortunately is a little different from this demo.
What's your favorite thing to do on a Saturday?
Tierney: Sleep in.
Luke Koz, guitar/vocals: Pizza party--as a verb.
Tell me about the vocal "sound." What was the first record you heard with this sound that inspired you?
Brunson: Sly and the Family Stone's There's A Riot Going On and/or Michael Winslow, the man of 10,000 effects.
Koz: Church.
What's your favorite place to eat in Brooklyn?
Tierney: Papacitos
Koz: Nha Toi on Havemeyer. Or Teddy's, but only because Andy [Becker, drummer] gets so stoked.
