America Opts For Taylor Swift Over Susan Boyle By a Terrifyingly Thin 113,000 Record Margin

It's official--singer-to-the-olds Susan Boyle, despite a fearsome late run, didn't quite overcome Taylor Swift for the 2009 sales crown. The final tally? 3,216,000 for Fearless, 3,103,000 for I Dreamed A Dream. Boyle did, however, trounce Swift in the non-digital world, selling 200,000 more actual CDs, since her fans have no idea how to legally download her record, let alone pirate it (suggesting Swift's margin might have been higher if her fans were bigger computer morons, a la Boyle's). But one indelible fact remains: Susan Boyle is 2010's and the entire new decade's first #1. She didn't sell much last week (a very post holiday 137,000 copies), but it was enough to claim the top spot for the sixth straight week.

This on a chart veritably loaded with last year's detritus: Gaga's Fame, Alicia Keys, Mary J., and Swift, in #2-#5 order. And the Young Money high is over: Lil Wayne's improbably great clique record fell an whopping 70 percent, selling 43,000 copies its second week out, humbled by, among other things, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (#7, 51,000). Two weeks until Vampire Weekend hits the charts and shows just how much all the publicity (and a great record, that too) in the world is worth. [NYDN, RS, MTV, Vulture]
