R.I.P. Kate McGarrigle
She was responsible for the Mountain City Four, the McGarrigle Sisters, "Cool River," Linda Ronstadt's "Heart Like a Wheel" cover, a 1994 Order of Canada, the country's Governor General's Performing Arts Award in 2004, and Rufus and Martha Wainwright, children of her marriage to Loudon Wainwright III. The cause was cancer, her age 63. So far the CBC's is the best appreciation I've come across. "The truth is, I've drawn a lot of my creative inspiration from Mum and her background," Rufus Wainwright told the paper. "She's a very earthy, very instinctual woman, and that comes out in her music. I knew very early on that, like her and Dad, I wanted to be a singer-songwriter." [CBC]
