On The Hold Steady's "Hurricane J," Which Has Piano In It, Somewhat Surprisingly

hold-steady-heaven-is-whenever-album-art.jpg
Somewhat bell-like, Sigur Rós-ian piano, but given the recent departure of keyboard/mustache guru Franz Nicolay, any at all is somewhat surprising. Not so, happily, the rest of "Hurricane J": The guitar riff, the en masse backing vox, the earnest lyrics about a real sweet girl who's made some not-sweet friends. "I know a place where we could drink and kiss for awhile"; "They didn't name her for a saint/They named her for a storm." This is kinda like a Bad Religion song, if Bad Religion wrote songs about girls. Streaming at Pitchfork now. Welcome back, dudes. Heaven Is Whenever, out in May, which is closer than you think.
