This Weekend! Megafaun, The Temper Trap, The Bronx, Girls, Major Lazer, Soft Pack, Bonobo, Anita Tijoux, Maluca, and Male Bonding
So, Friday. To start off, Megafaun, an Appalachian folk-rock trio (to your left), meld spirited banjo, soaring guitars, and mountain-man harmonies at the Mercury Lounge as part of their first U.S. tour. While the Temper Trap are best known for their hit song "Sweet Disposition" (which snuck into the (500) Days of Summer soundtrack and various ads), the Australian quartet will perform some other majestically U2-esque tunes to a sold-out Webster Hall. Finally, get two for the price of one at MHOW, where hardcore punks the Bronx with perform as both themselves and their south-of-the-border alter alias, Mariachi El Bronx.
Saturday, things get strange at Webster Hall, home to Girls' retro-pop stylings and possible-raised-in-a-cult mystique. Diplo and Switch's Major Lazer (a DJ collaboration represented by a cartoon character who supposedly lost an arm in the Zombie War and had it replaced with experimental lazers...go figure) unleash a wave of loony-bin noises at Terminal 5. Or, for a (slightly) tamer evening, check out the stripped-down indie rock of San Diego's the Soft Pack (formerly known as the Muslims) at MHOW.
As for Sunday, Bonobo, a/k/a Simon Green, spreads a wave of calm at MHOW with opulent atmospherics beefed up with Latin, funk, and jazz influences. Meanwhile, Le Poisson Rouge hosts an evening of global beats, featuring French/Chilean MC Anita Tijoux as well as Bronx-born Maluca, who flaunts influences ranging from merengue to house. Finally, London trio Male Bonding get friendly with choppy, high-velocity noise pop at the Mercury Lounge, their rambunctious nature due in part to the singer/guitarist's over-caffeination.
