Week in Review: Born Free

In the week M.I.A. broke the internet in a tidal wave of blood and guts and red hair, we did our best to put it back together.

This week was Hole week at Sound of the City, as resident expert Camille Dodero stalked Courtney Love across Twitter, a Letterman appearance, a feud with Billy Corgan, a show at Terminal 5, and for good measure, a print feature. I'm sure she'll call you any day now, Cam!

Let us nominate Love's replacement: Rachel Trachtenburg, who is awesome, and 16, and whose band SUPERCUTE! talked to us about boys, beer, and opening for Kate Nash. The mysteriously named Le Chev talked to us about his new super-funky, Fischerspooner-affiliated disco duo Avan Lava. And Zs lent us the premiere of their glittering new "Acres of Skin," then told us about how they made it.

MNDR and Class Actress did their respective solo things at the Bowery Ballroom, Of Montreal and Ghostface Killah played Columbia's $100k spring bacchanal, and Lloyd Banks brought an 8-year-old kid onstage with him at his show last night at the Nokia Theater. Curious and curiouser!

Farewell erstwhile streaming music service Lala.

Still haven't quite let go of Gang Starr's Guru: hear DJ Premier's radio tribute, read his Vibe interview, or get mad at FuckSolar.com, where the man who set up a fake charity in the dead rapper's name is currently being shamed, over and over and over again.

Plus the latest rap-related correction in the Washington Post, the 2010 dates for our very own Siren Festival, the Band of Horses-Shepard Fairey connection, the suspicious embrace of hip-hop by Magnum Condoms, the kindler, gentler Lit Lounge, the odd fate of Studio B, American Idol, the inevitable Justin Bieber/Black Flag mash-up, adventures in Grizzly Bear-related licensing and more, somewhere down below. Looking for something to do this weekend? Try Genesis P-Orridge's Ridgewood tag sale (!) or this new conceptual video arcade, as soundtracked by Les Savy Fav. We're back on Monday.
