Live: NYC Popfest Unofficial Afterparty at Glasslands, Featuring Dom, Happy Birthday, and a Topless Lady
Glasslands is always a sweaty mess. Winter, spring, fall, you name it- the two-tiered warehouse across the street from the old Domino Sugar refinery in Williamsburg is on fire all the time. Saturday night was no different. It was an unofficial after-party for the NYC Popfest, the adorable three-day festival in Brooklyn and Manhattan that features indie-pop from around the globe. Saturday's late night bands hailed from all over the country; amazingly, none were from Brooklyn. The highlight? Soft-edged punk trio Dom, from Worcester, who have been making a lot of fans of late:

But their biggest fans were the members of Golden Girls, another Worcester band with a throwback '90s sound. 
Dom plays with pro-tools keyboard lines through a laptop, so when the Golden Girls' guitarist joined them for a couple of songs, the three-piece's generally sparse live sound was given a kick. 
Happy Birthday from Brattleboro, VT played next. 
Sub Pop just released the self-titled debut in March from this super group that features Chris Weisman (also in the J Mascis outfit Witch), Kyle Thomas (a/k/a King Tuff), and Ruth Garbus (solo artist and sister of Merrill, aka TuNe-YaRdS). 
The club is so hot that people literally pour out of the doors between bands. Cops roll through often, telling drunken and disorderly hipsters to stay out of the road. There's something about Kent Ave. that makes one forget Brooklyn is a city with lots of cars. 
During the band's closer, the high-voltage and discordant jam "Subliminal Message," the whole crowd sang along. One fan was so excited (or maybe it was the heat), she pulled her top up. The band didn't seem phased.
Next up, Philadelphia's Drink Up Buttercup brought their electronica influenced power-pop to the stage.
Unfortunately, I missed the boat for Seattle's BOAT, who closed the show around 2 a.m. By then it was 100 degrees in Glasslands. Welcome to summer!
