Last Night: M.I.A. Got Kicked Off Stage At Her Own Record Release Party at P.S.1
Is it any surprise that M.I.A.'s semi-secret, Opening Ceremony-sponsored record release party last night at P.S.1 ended in chaos, disarray, and confusion? /\/\/\Y/\, the record we've all heard too much about at this point (though you owe it to yourself to read Robert Christgau's brilliant piece on it today), is finally out on Tuesday; to celebrate, M.I.A. invited Ninjasonik, Rye Rye, and a select few witnesses out to P.S.1, where things got typically weird. Doors opened at 7, the two openers did their thing around 8:30, and Maya didn't hit the outdoor stage till around 9:30--the time P.S.1 was supposed to have the show mostly wrapped up. Two songs later, M.I.A. got removed from her own stage. Everyone was promptly chased inside to the museum's third floor, where kids smoked, drank, and spilled beer, and the disgruntled, sorta burka-clad artist did a brief encore about an hour later. There was grumbling, dissatisfaction, drink specials (XXXO Rocks, kid), and of course, lots of dancing. Intrepid photographer Rebecca Smeyne was there:
