Hold Steady refugee Franz Nicolay has wasted no time since his defection from the band early this year; in addition to tending his 2009 solo album Major General and touring with Against Me!, he's now prepared another solo record, Luck and Courage, for October, whereupon he seems to once again sing with the verve and grandiosity of vintage Meatloaf, and yes, I mean that as a compliment.
And so, initially via Paste, here we have "This Is Not a Pipe," a fragile, mournful, banjo-driven shuffle with no overt Mission of Burma association I can discern. Looks like he'll be doing a Backyard Brunch show in Brooklyn later this month, mustache we're assuming very much intact. Go walk around and drink.
