Yes In My Backyard is a semiweekly column showcasing MP3s from new and emerging local talent.

Rabid post-punk smile-grinders The Men continue to set Brooklyn loft shows ablaze with their happy chainsaw accidents and Wipers-gone-hardcore propulsion. After a two year spray of limited edition cassettes, 12"s, and short-run vinyl, the band is set to release their highest profile release to date--their first album for Sacred Bones, joining the aggro wing of the label's usually zone-altering playlist with YIMBY faves Pop. 1280 and Hunchback. Recorded by Ben Greenberg at Python Patrol, the upcoming album was, according to bassist Christopher Hansell, "the first time we've recorded on tape and I don't think we'd ever look back." First taste "Bataille" is inspired by the French writer's Story Of The Eye and rides a pug-ugly joy-punk riff into almost krautrock oblivion--complete with gorgeous voice cracks and face-mooshing distortion.

Q&A: The Men

What is "Bataille" about?

Nick Chiericozzi, guitar/vocals: The idea of collective human thought and seeing some patterns mapped out in existence.

What inspired it musically?

Chiericozzi: The Wipers.
Rich Samis, drums: The sound of windshield wipers

What's your favorite guitar sound on any record ever?

Christopher Hansell, bass/vocals: Right now I've been obsessing over the guitar tone on Wire's Pink Flag. Obviously Greg Ginn's tone on almost all of the Black Flag records is a staple as is Iommi's tone on the early Sabbath records.
Samis: Any song on Gary Numan's The Pleasure Principle.

What's your favorite place to eat in New York?

Samis: I'll say--and I know that Chris and Nick will agree--that John's Donut Shop on Myrtle Ave is quite possibly the best diner in the Brooklyn/NYC area.
Hansell: Ganni's Pizzeria on Myrtle Ave. in Clinton Hill has some of the best regular slices on the cheap, and on weekends they are open until 4 a.m. or so. As far as classiness goes, Bamonte's in Williamsburg has some great Italian food if you want to spend a few extra bucks, take your dates there. Also, The Smoke Joint in Ft. Greene has great BBQ. I could keep going but I won't...

Are you an emerging local band who has an upcoming 7", MP3, or album? Are you not totally fucking terrible like 90% of the bands in this city? Then please send us an email at yesinmybackyard@gmail.com. Links and YSIs only. No attachments please!
