A Huge Big Star Tribute, Starring Folks From R.E.M, Teenage Fanclub, And Yo La Tengo, Is Coming To Town Next Month

big star sister lovers.jpg
Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers is quite possibly the most beloved power-pop album of all time, and certainly the most poignantly morose, a heartbreaking state only exacerbated by frontman Alex Chilton's death last year. Now comes word of a full-album live tribute with a crazy all-star cast, all trying their damndest to turn "Holocaust" into a celebration.

The lineup: Big Star drummer (and last surviving original member) Jody Stephens, alongside Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills, Matthew Sweet, Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake, Mitch Easter, Tift Merritt, Will Rigby and Chris Stamey of the dB's, and M. Ward. Plus an orchestra. They'll be doing Third/Sister Lovers in full March 26 at Mason Hall at the Baruch Performing Arts Center. (There was a similar deal last year in North Carolina.) Tickets are on sale Thursday at 11 a.m.; look for more info here soon. While not exactly an LCD at MSG situation, there are more people ridiculously jazzed about this than you think, so be prepared.

Looking forward to this but...I haven't heard anything about a full album live tribute coming from this live performance. At this point I don't think that is going to happen.

From the evidence, Auer & Stringfellow acquitted themselves better than passably when Chhilton 'reconstituted' Big Star. A little sorry not to see their names in the lineup, a little curious about any reasons for their lack of involvement.
