Don Hill's Has Shut Down

The downtown dive Don Hill's relaunched itself last year under the guidance of Nur Khan and Paul Sevigny, hosting celeb-studded semi-private shows starring Hole and the Dead Weather, as well as other open-to-the-public nights. (The pair also allegedly improved the bathrooms while keeping the grit and graffiti intact.) Hill, a longtime nightlife impresario who opened his eponymous club in 1993, passed away last month. Now comes word that the club's shutting down--effective immediately--with the Post getting the scoop directly from Khan:

"After the unexpected passing of Don Hill, there was no doubt in my mind about continuing his legacy by bringing in incredible talent over the last year, such as Iggy and the Stooges, the Kills, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as well as nurturing younger talent. Don Hill was loved by the community. Unfortunately, moneymaking opportunity unconcerned with preserving Don's legacy. I will be sad to see the doors close as it was such a passion project for me."

Eater hears that the club's financial situation wasn't all that great, so the "offer we couldn't refuse" situation perhaps shouldn't be too surprising. Sad, though, yes.

UPDATE: Musto has more financially related scuttlebutt.
