Madeon Gets Hands-On With 39 Pop Songs
Just when mashups seemed a horse corpse well flogged by the likes of Glee and Girl Talk, the prodigal son of Discovery-era Daft Punk and the very best of Dr. Luke's blockbuster pop comes along to breathe life into the genre. The 17-year-old wunderkind known as Madeon (he's based in Nantes, France) turns in a hands-on (and hands-only) video of him playing "Pop Culture," a "live" mashup of, in his words, "39 songs I like." (Among them: tunes by Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry, Stardust, and... Linkin Park?) What results is a catchy pop tune that's inspired enough to make the people hailing Madeon as "the future of dance music" seem not so crazy after all.
Madeon, "Pop Culture"
It's fitting that we can't see anything of Madeon beyond his wrists here, as the young'un has managed to keep his identity pretty well-concealed for somebody who's already played a number of fairly high-profile gigs to adoring audiences. Which is to say, this is hardly the first thing he's done: deadmau5 has loudly praised the kid's take on one of his songs, Yelle has taken to playing his version of "Que Veux Tu" live instead of their own, and the dance blogs have been going gaga over him. Let's see if Madeon can revive French house once again to worldwide prominence, or if he's simply the last brightly filtered light to shine in the wake of the Daft Punks and the Ed Bangers.
