PSY Hated America: So What?

PSY, running through all the American dollars flying rapidly in his direction.
By Dan Moore

PSY, the grinning face of "Gangnam Style," ran into his first international bad press last week when someone finally realized that America's favorite novelty artist has rapped about killing the "daughters, mothers, daughters-in-laws, and fathers" of "fucking Yankees."

The story first showed up in CNN's quasi-blog iReports section two months ago; since then we've learned the lyrics PSY performed were written by another band, and he's apologized in what is perhaps the most important geopolitical communique ever to contain the words "Jay Leno."

The apology is probably not enough to satisfy the people who were disgusted by his 2004 performance and just enough to set off the volunteer insincerity-fighters out there who were looking for a reason to declare him insufficiently serious for Real Music Fans. I have more in common with the first group than the second, but I accept the apology. I accept it because PSY deserves the opportunity to sell out--because in 2012, 1 A.P., it's the most honest thing he could do.

Don't get me wrong: Psy has almost certainly apologized because he's speaking, now, to an entirely different audience than he was in 2004, and that audience is making him millions of dollars. The creator of "Gangnam Style" is, to the surprise of people who are continually surprised by this kind of thing, not an ideologically pure Korean nationalist or anti-imperialist, and never was.

Why did CNN push the 'ausjeon' intentionally imflammatory mistranslation without so much as a fact check, when they could see that it was being challenged right on the ireport page? Why did ABC and FOX take it up verbatim without stopping to verify?

Your missing the point as usual. . The point is they were tried in a military court marshal and found not guilty. Think of the L.A. Riots under a Korean context. US presence in both Korea and Japan has a been a hot button issue for decades. It's been an even bigger problem in Japan which has sparked massive protests. Things are quit dangerous in Japan now for foreigners, especially Americans in Okinawa after the recent rape carried out by two US military personal. In addition to other breaches of misconduct. If you see any black vans stay clear of them if you want to live very long. Let's just assume that a crime/assault was committed by a Japanese civilian against a US military personal. The media would have given it little to no coverage. Let's assume that a US soldier was killed by a Japanese civilian. The Japanese government decided that they would be tried in a Japanese court under Japanese law. I can tell you right now that I am about 99% sure the Japanese civilian would have been found not guilty regardless. How well do you think that would have went over here? There would have been riots in the streets right!! Japanese are far more anti-west then Korea is by along shot. Might explain why Japan continues to turn inward while Korea is opening up. PSY was just representing what many felt at the time due to an unpopular if not illegal war. Although what brings up an ever bigger point is this. PSY isn't American he is Korean. He wasn't discovered in America but Korea. This happened nearly 8 years ago not in the US but in Korea.  So what right do we have criticizing him for something which later shows up due to a video which yet again wasn't even made for a US audience but Koreans. We are what made Gangnam popular and not for the reasons most people think. How many of you know Korean? I know a little but not enough to do much good. So we can probably rule that out. PSY fit the stereotype of the non threading Asian role. In this case the harmless comedian. In another case the martial artist, scientist, or the geek. I am pretty much guarantee that if it weren't for these stereotypes it would not have been as popular as it become. This is how the government controls us through our fear. As long as we fear what we don't understand they have control. Sounds a lot like China doesn't it.  PSY isn't who has a problem we do. We Americans like believing that we are the all what is good and just in the world. Yet in reality we lye somewhere in between. Not everyone sees our idealistic view of the world. What is worse is that when people disagree with us we seem them as an enemy. Not to mention since when does freedom of speech only apply to Americans!! We sure like preaching that crap to the rest of the world. That is as long as everyone sees things exactly the way we want them to. Respect is earned not given so time we knock off the self-righteous crap & move on.

@ fgtd100 and psy supporters - Did Americans behead the missionary? No! Insurgents did. Was it a safe idea for a Christian missionary to go preach in one of the most hostile Islamic areas of the world? No!  And the two girls were an accident, which the Korean government even confirmed. People get ran over all the time in Seoul, it's densely populated and people drive like crazy over here. Do Koreans need to spew xenophobic hate speech every time an American happens to be behind the wheel? Psy is guilty of being an emotionally charged crybaby who changes his views at the drop of a hat or dollar. Why are you defending this idiot? What does Gangnam Style, a song about a materialistic neighborhood that's the plastic surgery capital of the world, and represents everything wrong with Korean culture do for you? Does the horse dance make you burn extra calories? Unless you're a Korean, I see no point in lifting this stupid song even further. You must be a Gyopo 교포 trying to keep Psy's 15 minutes on life support.

You guys are so clueless.  Americans are by far more liberal and open-minded than other countries.  Asian countries in recent decades have had genocides and they are by far more racist than us.  I speak from experience only.  I've dated and befriended them.Either way, if he wanted to target songs at America, he should have been more peaceful in the public message he was conveying.If you were a famous singer, would YOU say those lyrics and think you should get away with it?  I bet some of the people who stand up for him would not dare say that stuff publicly themselves, so why back him up?He could have had a different anti-American message.  I just think he sounded really psychotic.

Who are you people to judge? You would have the same sentiments if 2 foreign soldiers came into your country, kill two American girls and went unpunished for it. Please stick your patriotic hypocrisy up you butt. This guy shouldn't have to apologize for speaking for 2 little girls who were murdered by 2 soldiers.

@fgtd100 Singing about killing someone's daughters, etc. slowly and painfully isn't really an effective anti-war message.

@fgtd100

Considering that over 35,000 U.S. servicemen died and another 8000+ are still listed as MIA to keep S. Korea from becoming a slave state to the North, you may want to STFU.

He made a conscious, voluntary, decision to sing that song, he sang it repeatedly because he wanted to. Now you may think it's O.K. to sing about killing our sevicemen and their families, but it's not, it's B/S and he is now backtracking and acting sorry so he can save his precious U.S. paycheck. The little SOB should be barred from ever coming back to the U.S. and put on a terrorist watch list.
