The Lumineers
Terminal 5
Friday & Saturday, 7pm, $30
Fresh off their first Saturday Night Live appearance and a pair of Grammy nominations, this rootsy, Denver-based trio continues riding the wave that has launched them from relative obscurity to the forefront of the Americana revival. Ironically, their hit indie anthem, "Ho Hey," off their self-titled debut, springs from the disillusionment of not making it in New York. Owing a clear debt to Mumford & Sons and other retro-populist Dust Bowl throwbacks, the Lumineers don't shed new light on the genre but succeed on the sheer strength of their lyricism, pathos, and storytelling, and they have the Tyrolean hats to match. -- By Aidan Levy

Ty Segall + Mac DeMarco + Ex-Cult + Jonathan Toubin
Webster Hall
Friday, 6pm, $16/$18
Ultra-prolific 20-something garage rocker Ty Segall has yet to release anything new this year, but his oeuvre keeps growing--last year it was with the '60s-ish acid-washed sounds of Twins and a gnarly cover of the Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale"--so he'll have plenty to draw from tonight. Joining him are some like-minded lo-fi scuzzy-sounding buzz artists, including plinky guitar jamster Mac DeMarco and bouncy, tripped-out blues magoos Ex-Cult. Also expect some party-rock cuts courtesy of '60s shimmy expert DJ Jonathan Toubin. -- By Kory Grow

Sinkane
Blue Note
Friday, 12am, $10
Although born in Sudan, Sinkane--known outside the music world as Ahmed Gallab--came of age going to punk shows in Columbus, Ohio. Today, he makes music that stretches between funk and jazz, singing reverberating vocals over understated production that recalls the best of chillwave. This year, the man who has contributed to projects by Eleanor Friedberger, Yeasayer, Caribou, and Of Montreal is touring with Toro y Moi, and I'd be surprised if he weren't jamming to his Underneath the Pine while recording last year's Mars. Catch him tonight at the Blue Note, where he and his band will have the stage to themselves. -- By Nick Murray

David Virelles Continuum
Village Vanguard
Friday through Sunday, 9pm & 11pm, $25
The Cuban pianist's beguiling Continuum was one of jazz's signal achievements of 2012, and lots of year-end lists took note. Its trio-plus-percussionist design doesn't really explain the way it connects the dots between yesterday and tomorrow, an idiosyncratic strategy that gives the bandleader plenty of leeway when it comes to dodging definitions. It's also an album that unfolds in a poetic sense, spilling as much science on its 20th spin as it does on its fifth. This will be fun. -- By Jim Macnie

Javelin + Guardian Alien + Life Size Maps
Shea Stadium
Friday, 8pm, $12
Brooklyn-based avant-dance duo Javelin named their upcoming album Hi Beams "because the songs evoke to us a sense of sky, stars, night, and warmth." Hearing the r&b guitar figures and atmospheric strut of recent single "Nnormal", I imagine Drake and 40 smoking weed under a star projector, giggling about getting Jamie xx and Patrick Adams together for Take Care's follow-up. Maybe they can bring in Javelin too, who sounded great doing an impromptu live "sesh" with Stalley and Curren$y in 2009. -- By Rajiv Jaswa
