Carmen Lynch performs at "The Business," at The Stand on Tuesday December 10th
You've spent a week eating leftovers and let's be frank: you're starting to look puffy. You need to get out and work those abs. And is there a better work-out for your gut than laughter? No. That's medical science. So do your health a favor and see some of our picks for the best value comedy shows in New York this week.

Wednesday, December 4th

In the Garage
The Creek and the Cave, 8 p.m. Free.
The Creek and the Cave just built out their second comedy showroom, featuring the very latest in 1980s suburban technology... a garage door. This new show lets Dad show it off to the neighbors, and it's a great kick-off. Host Jay Dean welcomes the delightfully odd Sarah Tollemache and Letterman alum Sean Donnelly, with added jokes from Jake Young, Erik Bergstrom and Claudia Cogan. The night also features a set from The Undone Sweaters (a Weezer cover band). So go have fun. Just don't look at Daddy's special magazines, OK?

Thursday, December 5th

Heart of Darkness
The Bell House, Doors 8 p.m. / Show 8.30 p.m. $10.
The Heart of Darkness is a psychedelic showcase that blends comedy, live music, and presentations from oddball scientists with fringe views that THE MAN won't accept. Face it: this kind of show is exactly why you moved to New York. If it isn't, you're boring and you should leave. Host Greg Barris introduces comedy from the great Todd Barry, music from Louie composer Matt Kilmer and scientists discoursing on this show's theme: "Space."

Thursday, December 5th

A Funny Thing Happened
Poco Bar, Doors 7.30 p.m. / Show 8 p.m. Free.
This downtown fun house is all about the swag. Shows at Poco usually pack out with fans of sketch videos and standup, and free drink giveaways flow down the throat of good audience members. Add half-price cocktails and $1 oysters all night and you have yourself a pretty sweet date night, my friends. Jokes from frequent bus user Casey James Salengo, recent Conan guest Aparna Nancherla and many more will ensure you get lucky.

Friday, December 6th

Something Cool
UCBeast, Midnight, $5
Make time in your Friday night drinking schedule for this late night showcase. For $5? It's a steal. Jermaine Fowler (Guy Code) joins Sabrina Jalees (Just for Laughs), and Ali Wong (Tonight Show), with sketches from the all-conquering ensemble BOAT.

Sunday, December 8th

Friends of Single People
Littlefield, Doors 7.30 p.m. / Show 8 p.m. $5.
Do you have a single friend who really shouldn't be? Take them along to this dating game show and perhaps love will strike. The show works like this: you represent your single friends. You go up onstage and answer questions about your unattached pals, while they cringe and remain as anonymous as they want in the crowd. It's part roast, part game-show, part social experiment.
