Cheap Laughs: The Best Indie Comedy in NYC This Week, 5/7 - 5/13
Morgan Shortell Burlesque performer Brief Sweat performs at "And I Am Not Lying" this Friday at UCBeast.
This week in Cheap Laughs, we have everything: funny Norwegians, Tinder titillation, boy burlesque, street toughs, secret passwords, cheerleading cancer, and the enduring lure of Quebec. We do it right, baby. Here's our rundown of the best in independently produced New York comedy this week.
Wednesday, May 7
Muchmore's is Williamsburg's new favorite venue for cluster-fuck, fun-times comedy shows, and Wild At Heart delivers the goods. Tonight, former Totally Biased correspondent Aparna Nancherla stops by, along with hilarious Norwegian Daniel Simonsen, the bear-huggable Frank Liotti, and many more. Kat Toledo hosts.
Lasers In The Jungle
UCBeast, 7 p.m. $5.
Thursday, May 8
UCBeast is a great venue for guaranteed funny, no-fail stand-up showcases, and Lasers In The Jungle is no exception. This week, whisky-voiced ex-party animal Dan Soder shows you his stuff, along with the Huffington Post's Babe Parker and Allison Castillo. Dan Wilbur (author of How Not To Read), Katina Corrao, and comedy polymath Sean Crespo share hosting duties.
It was only a matter of time: the sexual world's new favorite app just got it's own parody comedy show. Hosted by Lane Moore (The Onion, VH1) and Matt Powers (AdultSwim.com), Tinder Live is a treasure trove of ridiculous tips, tricks, and swipe etiquette for the discerning online fuck fiend. And if you're feeling super meta, we recommend you take your Tinder date to the show. It will either go super well, or really, really badly. Either way, it's a story.
Friday, May 9
New York's best variety show returns, with a marvelous mixed bag of entertainment for East Village midnight prowlers. Spectacular male burlesque performer Brief Sweat will arouse and intrigue you, as well slinky, seductive burlesque by Delysia LaChatte. There's storytelling from JiJi Lee, and stand-up comedy from Emmy Blotnick, Maria Heinegg and Andy Sandford. Jeff Simmermon hosts the wildness, fresh from touring the show in Virginia and Tennessee. Sharing New York's ultra-talented weirdos with the rest of the nation? That's doing the Lord's work.
The Creek and the Cave, 8 p.m. Free (donations encouraged).
The Wildcats are an imaginary group of Queens street toughs (J-Dawg, Sweet Baby J and Scooter) who host a comedy show, heckling their invited performers throughout. This month's outing has a special theme. Beloved comic and great friend of The Creek Ron Krasnow is battling cancer, and this show is set-up as a benefit... for the cancer. That's right: The Wildcats are on the tumor's side. So if you like (very) dark comedy and oncology, this is the place to be all night. Donations can also be made here.
