#WhatJayZSaidToSolange Highlights Spectacular Ignorance of Solange's Career

Solange live at Bowery Ballroom 12/18/12
Unless you've been living under a stack of used and discarded copies of Kingdom Come, you've no doubt seen the security footage of Beyonce's sister Solange losing it on Jay Z in an elevator. The footage leaked yesterday morning via (who else?) TMZ and quickly became all anyone could talk about. It's easy to understand why. Celebrities: They're just like us!

What's followed since the leak has been rampant speculation about what brought the fight on. We fielded theories on gchat yesterday that ranged as far and wide as Jay Z/Rihanna cheating rumors to other things people couldn't possibly know about. Of course, Twitter had their own ideas about #WhatJayZSaidToSolange, and many of them highlight one important fact: People need to show Solange a lot more respect.

Because Solange is a power house, you dummies. If we're being real, we'd say she's the more-organic, not-as-contrived version of Beyonce we wish Beyonce could be. (Watch Life Is But a Dream and imagine how much more interesting it would be if it had been Solange talking into that Mac Book-- she would've actually said something of substance.)

We've loved her for a very long time. She's wowed us live at Webster Hall a couple times, at Bowery Ballroom and Coachella. We were obsessed with "Losing You." In short, she's had the kind of sustainable and very enviable career most artists should strive for, one that sees her able to sell out mid-sized venues and rock festivals alike, pen songs for bigger artists, and all the while live like an A-Lister without all the baggage and demands of an A-List life. She's talented, smart, and self-aware, a trifecta you don't often find in many artists on her level. Which is why Twitter's hashtag #WhatJayZSaidToSolange is so disappointing, because a lot of people on the platform have stripped her of all three, reducing her to a nobody whose only worth is having a more famous sister and brother-in-law. Such ignorant and misguided ideas are the reason garbage articles like this one exist. We know who Solange is, and she's great. Here are some people who'd be better off finding that out.

Do we need to show Solange respect for her calm, reasonable, and non-violent demeanor? I highly doubt it.

I'm a little surprised by the double standards when it comes to violence..we're being asked to give her respect

With absolutely zero facts, other than that Solange assaulted Jay Z, the author somehow sides with Solange. Am I taking crazy pills? The whole story beyond the acts of violence, which may or may not have been premeditated, is pure conjecture.

I can't believe the voice would say that,,smh

Solange: "When can I sing the National Anthem at a Nets game?"

Jay-Z: "When you can sing."

Solange: "We can be the new First Family of Music, just like the Jacksons!"

Jay-Z: "Good idea, LaToya."

I don't respect anyone who thinks violence is the answer to solving problems. If it had been Jay Z throwing the punches, this media coverage would have had a totally different tone and I feel certain there would have been handcuffs and jail time involved. Horrible example she is setting for our youth.

You are ridiculous to come to Solange's defense, when in fact, it doesn't MATTER what Jz might have said. She's fucking trash for acting like that. and who cares if she is a good artist (she isn't--she's a BORE). The fact is she's a drunken raging idiot, or an entitled, arrogant, loose cannon

Wasn't crazy about her singing personally, but I thought her acting was solid.

Wow.... You can't be serious. It's not okay just because they are a celebrity to be hit in an elevator. What next cameras in a bathroom to track a celebrities every move???
If this was in the reverse and Jay Z hit Solange, he'd be crucified on social media. I'm a medical, mental health and cognitively disabled blogger who lives a small life and even I KNOW BETTER that this isn't right....I don't make any money off my blogs. YIKES...

this is such a nonsense article, defending 'sister number 2" for being so ignorant and rude to physically attach the husband of her sister. We're talking about animal level. Too much cocaine possibly. Surely stupidity.

Yes she really did not seem to be jumping toward Jay Z's defense against her sister. She knows blood is always thicker..... Mama' nem trained her right.

I don't know what she was upset about, but it would seem that, Sister Beyonce at least acknowledged that Solange had a reason to be upset. She "let it happen". She did not seem to be upset with her sister..yet it does seem she turned her head in JayZ's direction to say something to him. I say we give her the benefit of the doubt.

Nobody needs to pay her any respect because she didn't have any for her self. She acted like a wild animal in that elevator. Besides, her music goes double cardboard and if she wasn't Beyonce's sister her albums would be triple dirt.

@isaiah2damnsexy  and we see you've debuted #1 how many times. Oh thats what I thought. If someone disrespected your sister you would have remained calm. oh thats what I thought again!
