Pulp Fictions: Grant Morrison's Batman

Comics come out on Wednesday, and so does Richard Gehr's Pulp Fictions.

"Batman R.I.P."
Grant Morrison
DC Comics Hardcover

"Come on, hit me," taunts the Joker as the Batcycle bears down on him during the brain-rattling climax to The Dark Knight. Can do—and can identify. Critical opinion on the movie has been divided between those who perceive this half-billion-dollar baby as A Good Thing and those who find it Too Much of a Good Thing. Heath Ledger's Joker is the incandescent star of the film in either case, the "agent of chaos" around whose amoral core Christian Bales's slatelike persona flaps its heavy black wings.

BATMAN%20%23676_DYTLUXE-1BLOG.jpg

But another, even more brilliant, agent of chaos has been steadily reshaping the DC Universe since the early '90s, when Grant Morrison wrote weird and wonderful Animal Man and Doom Patrol stories for Vertigo. In short, The Dark Knight's kinetic excesses are but a dim shadow of the heady thrills rippling through arc after arc of Morrison's stint as Batman's prime mover since issue #655 in 2006. Perhaps in honor of Batman's upcoming 70th birthday in May 2009, Morrison is systematically destroying Bob Kane's creation. (Morrison's second Batman book, The Black Glove, hits the streets today.)

Batman_676blog.jpg

Morrison's Batman is darker, deadlier, and more troubling than director/co-writer Christopher Nolan's. The Dark Knight may "complete" the Joker onscreen, but Morrison's moral calculus is more complex than Nolan's interlocking duality. In Morrison's world, everything from Bruce Wayne's martyred father to his already corrupted son are up in the air and in play. Multiply this Oedipal geometry by two or three Robins, divide by Alfred the Butler, factor in Bruce/Batman's latest love interest (former supermodel Jezebel Jet), and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory suddenly feels like walk in the park.

BATMAN%20%23676_DYTLUXE-3blog.jpg

Currently four issues into a six-part arc titled "Batman R.I.P.," Batman has seemingly been driven insane by ten days in an isolation chamber, a 49-day "peak meditative experience," and/or the four minutes he spent dead during a heart attack. Batman, in his derangement, may (or may not) have reconstituted himself as the Batman of planet Zur-En-Arrh, a character introduced in 1958 and subsequently forgotten until Morrison's resurrection. No aspect of the Batman mythology is off-limits to Morrison, and the appearance of the impish Bat-Mite suggests that what's being depicted is mere delusion, though it's still too early to say.

batmanblog.jpg

Morrison isn't interested in complexity for its own sake: The stakes are much higher than that. As his intoxicated performance at the 2000 Disinfocom indicates, Morrison believes that writing comics is magic that can literally alter consensual reality. In Watchmen, Alan Moore surpassed every prior comics writer at imagining the "real lives" of superheroes. Morrison upends the genre in another way. Batman, lacking super powers, achieves his dark mastery by adhering to the magus Aleister Crowley's Nietzschean maxim: Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

BATMAN%20%23676_DYTLUXE-4.jpg

"I didn't expect costumed psychopaths, regular contact with hallucinogenic compounds or seemingly alien interventions," reads one of Bruce Wayne's journals, and damn if those aren't the basic elements of Morrison's style. Batman isn't merely a comic; it's an autobiography. By mapping himself ever more closely onto the DC Universe in Batman (and, to a lesser degree, in All Star Superman, Final Crisis, and all the other books he tosses off like so many toenail clippings) Grant Morrison is doing what Creationists can only imagine: He's creating a universe in his own image.

So well over 60 years of success, the Dark Knight gets a complete "redo" just because some wanna'be comic superstar wants to completly redo a American icon.
To me Morrison is like Mr. Quesda the editor and his pals that ripped apart The Amazing Spiderman character and contunity along with the death of and redo Captain America Now the powers that be at DC are turning over the "keys" of one big three characters to one of these
arrogant "hired guns" that stir the pot and then run away like hell to their next fiasco.

In response to George Stefano's post:
I don't understand why comic book fans are so opposed to significant character development. At some point, characters become so iconic that writers become too afraid to inject drastic changes into their stories, and that's exactly what causes people to lose interest in them. I'm not interested in run-of-the-mill stories about Batman, Superman or the X-Men. What really takes hold of my interest is when a writer can capture the essence of what makes a character interesting to me in the first place, and then develop a story that is completely unexpected. Whether most people will admit it or not, we as readers like to be surprised. We like to not know how things are going to turn out. And despite all or grumbling, we like to see characters change and develop. What we don't like is when these changes don't align with what we've come to understand as the constants that make up a given character. The brilliance of Morrison is that he's able to create stories that give us these significant and unexpected changes and developments while still remaining true to what makes these characters so appealing in the first place. Batman R.I.P. isn't a "redo of an american icon", it's just a fresh look at a really interesting character with 60 years of baggage (which is no easy feat).

And to call Morrison a "wanna'be comic superstar" and a "hired gun" is rediculous. As far as writers go, the man practically defines the term "comic superstar". He's been at the helm of some of the biggest franchises this industry has to offer in the 20+ years he's been writing (Batman, Superman, JLA, X-Men, etc), and has consistently been met with both critical and commercial success. And a "hired gun" doesn't spend 8+ collective years of his career crafting elaborate stories for the DC universe. It's blatantly obvious from any example of his work that the guy is passionate about writing comic books, so to characterize him as a guy who swoops in with a poorly thought out story, collects a paycheck, and moves on is just flat out wrong. If you don't like the stories he creates, that's fine. But don't mischaracterize him as a hack.

I totally agree with George Stefano. I don't think there is anything that impressive about what he does. He comes in, kills off top tier characters and changes others completely. Of course this is going to make an impact and cause some ripples, doesn't mean it's genius though.

Grant Morrison brought Marvel comics such wonders such as xorn, a living star that was really just Magneto in a halloween costume. Killed Phoenix, Magneto and other A list characters. Wolverine who looked like a knock off of a sopranos character in his cheesy leather outfit. Beast became a hoofed like lion wannabe.

Give me a book and a guarantee I can kill every character I want, completely alter the entire universe and you will remeber my run. I compare his work to j michael straczynski on spiderman, whose brilliant idea was to have Gwen Stacy giving birth to Norman Osbournes children without Peter knowing. Grade A hack work.

A brilliant writer can come up with unique stories and ideas without butchering the world he is writing completely. If everything Morrison did at marvel is an example of his brilliance, why has almost every change he made been rectified?

I don't think it makes him great that he comes in kills everyone and disfigures the universe his characters are in. He just comes in, takes a crap on the comics and then high tails it to the next gig. Total HACK!!!!

DMW says:

Ummm...I guess if you boil down writing to what happens and not how it happens, well your bookshelf is either small or full of "bad" writers. The genius of Grant Morrison, and the reason I can't wait to pick his work up is that he challenges his characters and his readers by working on several levels at once. The individual issues building the Xorn story are great, and the reveal was a surprise. I recently re-read his first five issues of JLA and the craft he employs in the simplest of plots and big action storytelling is at play panel by panel. He creates far more possibility than he destroys. It's an unfair and unfounded criticism, and if you don't like the way he puts together a story or the outcome, well, to each his own. But, RIP is far from a sensationalist money grab, and probably doesn't even mean a literal death for Bruce Wayne. Like most of Morrison's work, things are rarely as simple as they seem, and I like the fact that, hit or miss, he swings for the fences when he takes on a project. All Star Superman is about the death of Superman, and is a masterpiece. And by the way, Brubaker is writing the greatest stories I've ever read about Captain America without Captain America...It's not the end that's important...it's the journey sometimes, and that's why we like Morrison.

R Check says:

Morrison is and always has been a huge bag of suck.

There's no fear of character development. There's fear of stupid changes for the sake of making changes. There's the fear of disfigurement in the guise of development to sate the MTV babies with shock value garbage.

He hacks and slashes his way through characters and DOES NOT "remain true" to their spirits in spite of what his fans claim. There is nothing terribly clever or genius in his style. People used to harp on Johne Byrne for far less...

Yes, Morrison has seen his away across many big titles... and the industry has not been better for it. Rewind the tapes and see the same garbage being spewed about the "awesome and creative talents" like Rob Liefeld that would save comics and superheroes... Same stuff.

You can watch his wake and see how all his genius is constantly "fixed" and undone because once the sound bite fans have moved on, the real fans want their characters back.

Having passion doesn't make one talented. William Hung isn't a great singer no matter how much he loves doing it. Being able to drop a clue here and there and coat-tail "viral marketing" tactics in stories is not talent. His only talent is manipulating people with low standards with easy tricks.

I agree with George. There has been nothing about this particular storyline that I have found compelling. DC is definately headed in the wrong direction turning over its most popular character and icon to this creative team. Morrison's work on the X-men was the exact reason I stopped reading it. I hope that his work on this and Final Crisis doesn't turn me off to the DC Universe for good. While he is obviously very talented and in no way a hack, this particular storyline is a great example of how change for simply change's sake is not good.

Cairo says:

The problem with Morrison, besides his alienation of fans in general and his inability to tell a story with cohesion, is his disdain for writers before him. Morrison decides Batman needs and new love interest and Voila! Jezebel Jet. Never you mind Jeph Loeb's compelling rendition of the Batman/Catwoman relationship. Morrison would rather stoke his own ego by making it his woman, not the one from years before.
Also, his villains are stupid. That may sound trite, but that is the essence of it. I'm not going to sidestep that. "El Sombrero" is a tuxedoed man in a luchador mask. Morrison created a villain named "The Hat." He had a villain who was blind, but had eyes tattooed on his fingertips so he could see. This article lauds Morrison for being some sort of revisionist, but he's not being clever or cute or ironic by making bad Silver Age style heroes. It's hard to read this tripe.
To say this arc is better than The Dark Knight is to say Mafia! is better than The Godfather because it's different and irreverent.
Morrison's Batman is disdainful of the fans and the character and I'm disappointed people insist on praising this shock value writing. Grant Morrison is the equivalent of a high school girl decking herself in black makeup and clothes and screaming swear words for attention. Stop giving this diva what he wants.
As a side note, Morrison's ridiculous plot situations have bled into Paul Dini's work on Detective Comics, and that's a shame. He actually understands the characters.

I am soooo afraid. I am a long time Batman comic fan. I so do not want to lose the Batman that I can never get enough of... to any upcoming plots that will kill the core of what makes him so great.

I am giving this RIP storyline a chance. I like pieces of it but it makes me sad to think I may lose Batman as I have lost my beloved Rogue from the x-men!

Character assassination.

I agree with a lot of the comments posted here.

Name: Batarang1 says:

Morrison is a great writer who is diverse in his storytelling methodology. It doesn't always work out perfectly, but there are too many successes in his portfolio to simply write him off. From unique, crazy ideas like the Doom Patrol to The Invisibles to WE3, to a HUGELY successful and exciting relaunch of JLA and the XMen, to a personal quest to make Superman relevant again with ALL Star Superman (truly great) and Superman Beyond (we'll see), Morrison is one who really cares about the characters and how they develop through facing unique and daunting situations. I think if his methods were a little more in step with what other writers already do, he would of course fit in and not incense hardcore fans. I've read comics for a really long time and I appreciate his attempts to renevate and explore concepts and characters in his own way. It shakes things up and forces the readership to react. I react to his changes by feeling excited about those newly interpreted characters. Without change, it really just turns into stagnation for comics. And who wants that? A good example is what happened to Batman during the 'ONE YEAR LATER' time period at DC. Here he was, after the wrap up of Infinite Crisis and all that came with it, and he was simply put back out there b/c that's what the readership expected and that's what the writers responded to. Little was explored about what happened during the year away, it felt a little contrived. It was good for the comics' success to put him back together quickly but I think it could have been explored in a more courageous and unique way. I think that is what Morrison strives to do with most of his stories, I think that is what we have with RIP, a unique take on Batman's downfall, whether or not Bruce dies. It is a storyline that explores more of a mental breakdown, which is more sophisticated to relay than say, Knightfall was with the physical take down (it holds up well, though) I think we all know that back issues are available for those who like the 'old ways'. Or for Batman, there are many one shots and alternate books that look at the character from various points in the past and present. Plenty for all to enjoy if you hate Morrison. I just think that for comics to continue to do well, they will need innovative writing as well as excellent artistry from the visual dept.

So. The Black Glove is this secret organization composed of ultra rich high rollers who wager on people's lives for kicks. And they're led by the devil himself. And they're out to destroy Batman.

Sounds like a James Bond movie crossed with Night Stalker.

One consolation - Art's good though.

"real fans"? Sounds like Sarah Palin and her "real" America. He "does not reamin true to characters"? I suppose this guy is the authority about what makes a version of a character "true". These commenters are like the comics Tailban. They demand the "keys" to the characters and they are the most vocal in a total case of projection. Ultimately, Morrison's writings have brought pleasure, entertainment and stimulation to millions of readers over a 20 year career, and not just "his" fans; as well as popularizing and bringing an untold number of new readers to comics. To paraphrase Morrison, these people want to smuggle their comics home in brown paper bags and keep comic-reading at the level of stamp-collecting.

Morrison is a genius. He is also a cross between Alister Crowley and Robert Anton Wilson. If you don't get what he's saying or what he does, You'll hate him. "They're destroying an icon!! They're killing something unreal to begin with so he can make money and kill something else!!!" no, no, no...

Don't like it, don't give money. Society sure has a lot of issues about people who end stagnation. Things change, and maybe if you changed with them and fully engaged in the development of the story, you might actually learn something. But as Wilson once quoted.. "Communication can only be shared between equals."

Grant Morrison along with a lot of "bitches who need to get checked" are ruining my childhood. From crappy movies and tv show remakes to now one of the biggest and best comic book icons ever is getting messed with!!

STOP F*&king with my Childhood!

The REAL problem I have is the way Morrison wrote Batman out of his lame-ass book. He made Batman uses a gun??? WTF. That goes against EVERYTHING that is Batman. HE DOESN'T USE A GUN!!! STOP WRITING SHIT LIKE THIS!! If he wants to kill him to show a different spin or liven up the universe FINE but, THE GUN!! SHAME ON YOU GRANT MORRISON and Shame on anybody who think he writing good!!

What really amazes me is that I can't believe the editors at DC let him get away this! They should have seen the the script and screamed at him, "HAVE YOU LOST YOUR DAMN MIND!??". I'm ashamed to be a DC fan right now. The editors at DC should be fired. Plain and smile. Anybody who like Grant Morrison is someone who doesn't know comics very well and can't distinguish between good writing a plain old crap. Just look at the art then you idiots! Why read comics if not for the stories?? Grant Morrison is going to be out of a job soon. Sooner or later editors are going to catch on that fans aren't going to buy this crap anymore. I'm totally serious. Grant Morrison has final crossed the line!! His run on good books is over. Yeah, he did some interesting stuff with 3rd and 4th tier books but, if you step up to take the reigns on a big book like Batman you better make it good!!!

He didn't. So you know what? Your getting crucified. That's the price you pay when your at the top. RIP/Final Crisis is COMPLETE is garbage. How is it that every book going on at DC is good except, Batman?? This is unacceptable. Thank god Dini is on Detective. Why even try to mess with one of the biggest iconic heroes ever?? Writers can't be creative enough to think of something different and outside the box. You people need to seriously wake up and stop putting up with this. Your all like little drones saying keep feeding me crap and I'll eat it. Enough is enough. I swear to god if I see Grant Morrison at a ComicCon this year he getting yelled at and bitch slapped for sure! F-You Grant Morrison!
