The Worst Lyrics of 2008: NCAA-Style Showdown

And now it's time for the "I love you like a fat kid loves cake" memorial Worst Lyrics of 2008, March Madness–style tournament, this year a terrifying mélange of appalling oral-sex requests, bargain-bin philosophies, grammatical atrocities, and cringe-inducing pillow talk. To elevate the drama, I provided a trusted colleague with the 16 artists who qualified and had him assign seeds—Lil Wayne you expect to go deep into a showdown like this, but Lucinda Williams? Some fantastic match-ups resulted, but in the end, nobody is topping Nickelback's backstage-pass bon mot, as devastating a blow to feminism as Katy Perry and Sarah Palin combined. Oh, for those innocent days of 50 Cent.

Wow, Nickelback as the "Worst XXXX of 2008". Way to go out on a limb there, folks. Where the hell was P!nk on this list?

So what?
I'm still a rock star
I've got my rock moves
And I don't need you tonight...

Can someone please tell me what one would consider 'rock moves'?

Mike says:

Mr. Ed Kollin, it's actually quite common for pop songs to repeat the same word or phrase several times, and it hardly qualifies as an attempt to write actual lyrics. I suppose you find the lyrics to Be My Baby atrocious as well. Miss the point much?

(Note: I'm not defending the song by any means.)

Posted On: Tuesday, Dec. 23 2008 @ 10:22PM
EdKollin says:

Mr. Mike: While the lyrics of “Be My Baby” leave something to be desired in the innovation department (Note: I'm not knocking the song by any means) at least the words are in English not Britneyspeak “I got you crazy”???????. I used that paragraph as an example of why that song as whole deserves consideration for the worst lyrics of 2008. As it happened I had been listening to Lily Allen’s version just before reading that blog. I happen to be very into Allen’s vocals but her version while not as bad as the original was still hard on my ears.

Don't agree with all your choices -- I mean, really, Chinese food or eggs seem like reasonable accompaniment, T-Pain's hand a sensible alternative. But Nickelback definitely wins the prize -- any guy trying that line risks having it bitten clear through, I figure.

The Killers rock!

Roberto says:

Actually, "Human" by the Killers is more deep than what people think. The line 'dancer' is in is actually a reference to the fact of a great amount of raising dancer generation in america, and if you think about it, dancers follow predeterminated moves, so theyre like programmed robots. Brandon Flowers is a genius about that line, are we human? (do we do what we feel, following instinct and desire), or are we dancer? (do we follow a stereotype of american person, who doesnt live his life like in the old times). That's actually what Brandon Flowers tries to say, so definately its not a bad lyric, but people is stupid and can't understand complex lyrics. Hope people notice this, The Killers are just an amazing band, probably one of the best bands of the decade!
