Ah Jeez: Michael Steele Brings the Republican Fight to "Urban-Suburban Hip-Hop Settings" in the Washington Times

Oh for fuck's sake. The lede today in a Washington Times piece about Michael S. Steele, the new Republican National Committee Chairman, who also happens to be an African-American:

Newly elected Republican National Committee Chairman Michael S. Steele plans an "off the hook" public relations offensive to attract younger voters, especially blacks and Hispanics, by applying the party's principles to "urban-suburban hip-hop settings."

Now, this comes as no surprise from a party that famously managed all of 26 total black delegates at the 2008 Republican National Convention, a figure that was good for slightly less than 2% of the total delegation. This, among other things, represented a 40-year-low: a flashback to 1968 for a party that was running against an African-African candidate in a country that's 15% black. Michael Steele was there of course, getting his credentials in order: we have him to thank for "Drill Baby Drill."

Add the murderous drubbing the Republicans took from so-called hip-hop voters (a demographic approximated by mashing up the African-American vote and the youth vote, which both swung overwhelming Democratic compared to 2004, to the tune of as many as 73 electoral votes), not to mention actual hip-hop stars, and Steele's coronation was probably inevitable. And not because Steele was likely to be more effective. The tokenistic-type magical thinking that the Republicans awkwardly flashed in Minneapolis basically prophesized the party's ensuing blind faith that a moderately qualified former Lieutenant Governor and current Fox News talking head would, by virtue of being black, somehow turn back the tide.

And Steele, apparently, is going to get very complicit with this myth indeed:

"There was underlying concerns we had become too regionalized and the party needed to reach beyond our comfort" zones, he said, citing defeats in such states as Virginia and North Carolina. "We need messengers to really capture that region - young, Hispanic, black, a cross section ... We want to convey that the modern-day GOP looks like the conservative party that stands on principles. But we want to apply them to urban-surburban hip-hop settings."

Nevermind that "urban-surburban hip-hop settings" are fundamentally deaf to a message that involves enormous emphases on incarceration, draconian drug laws, regressive taxes, and the shredding of whatever meager social safety net still remains in this country. "Under Mr. Steele's helm," writes the piece's author, Ralph Z. Hallow, "the 'old' may seem inappropriate in the Grand Old Party's affectionate nickname. [Steele] said he is putting a new public relations team into place to update the party's image. 'It will be avant garde, technically,' he said. 'It will come to table with things that will surprise everyone - off the hook.'"

Hallow rightly asks him what the fuck he's talking about with that latter, malapropized bit of slang: "Does that mean cutting-edge?"

Probably not, Ralph--probably not.

In the video accompanying this article, Mr. Steele looks like one of those "Men in Black". Maybe he needs one of those gadgets that makes people forget. He could point it at a television camera, press the button and wipe the last twenty five years or so from the memory of the American people. The problem Mr. Steele has is that the American public remembers: It was the Republicans who pushed hardest for the deregulation that eventually turned the Stock Market into an elaborate Ponzi scheme. It was the Republicans who pushed hardest for tax cuts to protect the wealth acquired by those who lied to, stole from and cheated the American people.

Champion of the Truth says:

It was also the Republicans who pushed hardest for a so called faith based initiative on behalf of religious leaders. An affirmation of an ability to KNOW about the existence of a good one in Heaven at war with an evil one cast down to and ruling over Earth is a FRAUD that follows from the lie that myth is truth. Religious leaders who repeat the lie that myth is truth in defense of their fraudulent affirmations make threats against the life and or afterlife of others and thereby extort tithes and offerings in exchange for a life long indoctrination in the lie that myth is truth. The truth is that myth is myth. Belief in the truth leads to tolerance. The lie is that myth is truth. Belief in the lie leads to intolerance. The American people will see little progress in the fight against terrorist as long as the Republicans continue to ally themselves with intolerant liars engaging in fraud and extortion.

Jamal Washington says:

First I would like to say what a great article but I think its missing some details.

First what is “Hip- Hop Republicanism” or aka Urban conservatism it is a movement within both Democrat & Republican circles. All you have to do is take a look at Newarks Cory Booker or Adrian Fenty to get a glimps.

This movement was born out of a rebellion against the 40-plus years of bad leftist polices and years of mismanaged urban areas under Democrats. In his article “The Blueprint for Urban Conservatism?” Brandon Brice a Harlem Republican who describes himself as being a “Hip- Hop Republican” that given the economic trends of Hip Hop culture, since it’s inception, this one movement has created more African-American entrepreneurs than any other industry in America, which speaks to one of the reason for adopting the name.

As with any business plan there must be a mission, thus the mission of the Urban Conservatism movement is to highlight real issues; healthcare affordability, fiscal responsibility, solutions to better inner city schools and job creation. Let’s think about the trends of economic activity in urban America.

In 2007 Def Jam Chairman Russell Simmons created a credit based debt card for urban families to input funds on a card, without creating debt or overdraft fees, as a means to educate on financial literacy. In 2007, Atlanta rapper T.I. started T.I construction as a means to help recently released ex-convicts find employment. Def Jam South Rapper David Banner teaches low income residents in the south about the importance of saving and investing. Jay-Z, when he’s not on tour, gives more to Make A Wish, Brooklyn Public Schools and the Marcy projects than any other rap celebrity in the New York City area. So now that we’ve discovered that Hip Hop has not been the source of fault for urban America’s downfall; we can now consider the idea that neither the government and Wall Street had a hand in this decay..

In reality, urban conservatism speaks to all of the issue’s in everyday neighborhoods by putting a direct spin on how to counter education, by offering advanced literature of Mac Beth and The Canterbury Tales in neighborhoods schools that never have considered this broad array of topics. The Urban Conservatism movement influences ex-gang members to put down the guns and pick up a book, or a pen to learn how to start their own legal businesses. This movement takes experts out of the hospitals to speak on pro-active health in local community centers. The movement utilizes media contacts, not for personal gain, but to address the crisis of housing affordability, or the need for prison reform so that tax payers aren’t baring the burden via tax dollars. The movement recognizes that America is changing and it’s time for the Republican Party to adapt to new solutions.

Imagine if Hip Hop icons Jay-Z or Puff Daddy, gave concert tours on economic empowerment or how to start businesses, what influence could this create towards 10,000 young minorities under the age of 18.What makes this concept of Urban Conservatism unique is that it pushes minorities to become self sufficient and responsible. The blue print for urban conservatism is for the party to take on new problems in the 21st Century. The movement recognizes that Republicans can no longer run on set guidelines to win elections, but must solely run on the issues.

Zach Baron's first 3 words in his article so turned me off, I didn't read the rest of the article. Mr. Baron, while you may appeal to a certain faction of the population, in my opinion, your ideas may be taken more seriously if you used a little class in the presentation. The Republican Party can use good ideas and support...not inappropriate language, its a turnoff!

....well this is a brilliant idea since Mr. Steele is a dead ringer for HUMPTY from the "Humpty Dance"-digital underground 1990's rap group.....check you tube....
