Interview: Morning Joe's Willie Geist Talks Pat Buchanan's 'Thug Life' Tattoo

Geist, Willie08CROP.jpg

Way funnier than this photo would lead you to believe.

Open-minded types that we are, we're finding ourselves increasingly entertained by MSNBC's Morning Joe, which we'll nominate as the best show to breakfast by--it has a kind of looseness that TV needs more of, plus it's actually aimed at adults. And our favorite within this favorite is Willie Geist, who co-hosts the program with Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski (along with regular guests Mike Barnicle and Pat Buchanan). Willie may well be the most amusing man on morning television, so we thought we'd ask him a few questions about his early-a.m. cable life.

Is it our imagination, or is more alcohol consumed on your show than on most morning programs?

It is not your imagination. People assume there's some FCC rule that says you can't drink alcohol on television. Nonsense. No such rule exists. Actually we haven't checked the rules, but there probably isn't one, right? Anyway, thousands of drunk people are watching our show at 3 and 4 a.m. in some parts of the country. The least we can do is share an occasional drink with them.

Having to be awake and alert and on TV at 6 a.m. seems rather intimidating. What time do you have to go to bed and get up?

"Intimidating" isn't the word. It's unreasonable, unnatural, and probably unsafe. My alarm goes off at 4 a.m. For the first three minutes of the alarm, I assume it's all part of a horrific dream I'm having. Then the painful reality of my life takes hold and I get in the shower, where it's hard to distinguish the drops of water from the tears. I usually get to bed around 10 or 10:30 (i.e., whenever The Bachelor ends and the post-show online chat is over--my money's on Jillian, by the way).

Morning Joe is a rather political program. How would you describe your own politics?

Since I'm not doing the political analysis around here, I keep my politics close to the vest. My two most recent jobs have been on shows hosted by conservatives, Tucker Carlson and Joe Scarborough, so people make assumptions about me. Those assumptions are not entirely accurate. All I'll say is, Ron Paul was robbed.

If you could have the career of one steroid-using baseball player, who would you choose and why?

Jose Canseco. He's the anti-Barry Bonds. Rather than splitting hairs about the steroids he took, Canseco writes books bragging about them and trashing his own legacy. I met Canseco in a nightclub in Miami a few years ago, just after he had left baseball. It was late and he was standing alone. He was wearing a mesh tank-top with nothing underneath it. I went up and told him enthusiastically that he should make a comeback so he could reach the 500-home-run milestone. His response was --and I'm paraphrasing here--"F*** you." Instead of returning to baseball, Canseco joined the cast of The Surreal Life 5 where he traded barbs with Bronson Pinchot and Omarosa. If you're going to be a disgraced cheater, you might as well have fun doing it.

Paul says:

Willie is great. I look forward to any contribution he makes to the program

Jandrea says:

Willie's the kid whose parents seat him at the grownup table, hoping he'll pick up some substance and develop some social skills. Until then,he watches blankly. Occasionally they pull him into the conversation and let him think he's clever. Harmless enough.
Maybe he brings 7 or 8 younger viewers.

Dr. Carroll Quigley says:

Of all the programs availible on that weapon of mass deception we call cable television, I would have to say that "Morning Joe" is perhaps one of the only ones that is not guaranteed to leave you with a net deficit of brain cells. I enjoyed the interview, but I think it is fair to warn Willie that mentioning Ron Paul is not going to help his chances at getting a promotion.

caroldaryl says:

Willie is the only reason to even watch this debacle of a "show". He's beyond clever verbally and never at a loss for the proverbial "snappy come-back". When Joe finally goes off the deep end and gets committed, Willie can take over the lead spot and maybe Mika will step up the the plate and actually use her brain (and her college degree). I can't wait for "Wake Up with Willie" !! (Plus he's cute)

I, too, have to admit that I love Pat Buchanan. It's weird. I don't like his politics, but I like him. There's something about him that's endearing. I think it's because he does have strong opinions, but he's able to laugh at himself. He actually keeps coming back for more on Morning Joe and Hardball; obviously he is well-respected by these folks. My favorite pair of guests: Pat Buchanan and Eugene Robinson. Now that's entertainment . . . informative, but entertaining!

RMGofCO says:

I love Willie and agree...he is one of the bright spots on this partisan (Joe) and subservient (Mika) show. Barnicle (?) and Pat...they are the other bright spots depending on the day. I get tired of Joe's tired rhetoric and when Willie is finally "at the mike" his natural wit...well, is worth the wait.

Wnbresn says:

Well this week Mika's out so the show reverts back to being just another Hannity knockoff. When is MSNBC going to wise up and toss that pompas ass Joe out of there. I love it when Mika's dad is on the show. He shuts Joe up fast and makes him look like more of an idiot than he normally appears to be. Now to me a great show would be Willie and Mika with the rest of the gang. Send Joe back to Faux news where he belongs and so wants to be.

Holmey says:

Willie is right about Pat Buchanan, Pat is making me wonder if I am a closet republican.
It is nice when Willie breaks out of his 'shell' now and then, he and Mika should tag team Joe and get him on the hot seat.

Geist rules. Hilarious. Best part of the show and even funnier online when he gets to do his own thing. Definitely needs his own show.

How in GOd's name did you make it ? Only MSNBC could have made this blunder.
Try an interview with a conservative. Try undestanding solialism.
Are you really that ignorant?

JOHN says:

How in GOD'S name did you make it as a TV personality? Only MSNBC could have made this blunder.
Try an interview with a conservative and listen. Try undestanding solialism and where we are going as a nation. Take a trip to the heartland and see what's going on. Are you happy with your decision on this President and where he is taking us?
Are you really that ignorant?

i think john is being way too hard on willie. i really like him.however i understand why john is upset with the show itself. scarborough and his guests who fawned over obama for the last two years had a lot to do with the pending collapse of our country and the socialism our grandchildren will live under.

JOHN AVERY says:

BEST SHOW FOR AM. SPONTANEOUS, LIVELY INTERACTION. CHEMISTRY IS GREAT WITH JOE'S RANTS AGAINST MIKA'S SANITY. PAT IS TERRIFIC HERE AND ELSEWHERE DESPITE HIS APOCALYPTIC RIFFS. WILLIE PROVIDES A DROLL PRESENCE--WISH HE HAD GREATER CONTRIBUTION. LOVE THIS PROGRAM!

Nina says:

I cant stand Joe, but I do derive pleasure watching him loose his mind now and again. His pain is my pleasure. Mommy Mika seems at least somewhat tuned into the big pcture, Willie cracks my ass up with News I Cant Use, Barnicle is wishy-washy, but harmless...and I guess I am also guilty of being won over by Pat Buchanan...I rarely agree with anything he has to say, but he's like a lovable grandpa ranting about how he had to walked to and from school for miles, in the rain, uphill...both ways! my least favorite guest? Dylan Ratigan & Maria Bartiromo, really any one of the CNBC rats that come on the show to bemoan how Wall Street is being treated unfairly!!! boo! hiss! please, just jump already!

I am up because of hot flashes and what better way to cool off than with Willie Geist.
