M.I.A. May or May Not Be A Terrorist Apologist, Says New York Times

mia-pregnant-grammys.jpg

My lord this is a badly informed piece in the Times this morning. The lede:

To many Americans, Maya Arulpragasam, known as M.I.A., is the very pregnant rapper who gyrated across the stage at Sunday's Grammy Awards. Tet in Sri Lanka, where she spent her childhood years, M.I.A. remains virtually unknown. And some who do know her work say she is an apologist for the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels fighting in the country's long-running civil war.

The author, Thomas Fuller, goes on to identify a couple of shreds of evidence--"In the video for her song "Bird Flu," for instance, children dance in front of what looks like the rebels' logo: a roaring tiger"; "M.I.A. was born in Britain but moved to Sri Lanka when she was 6 months old so that her father, an engineer and a leader in the Tamil separatist movement, could help fight for an independent Tamil homeland," a fact that isn't mentioned till the article's thirteenth paragraph--that supposedly support the claim that she's a Tiger apologist.

Never mind that this reporting was done, in far greater depth, a full four years ago by Robert Christgau, whose conclusion then was as follows:

Moreover, beyond a link now apparently deleted from her website to a dubious Tamil tsunami relief organization, I see no sign that she supports the Tigers. She obsesses on them; she thinks they get a raw deal. But without question she knows they do bad things and struggles with that. The decoratively arrayed, pastel-washed tigers, soldiers, guns, armored vehicles, and fleeing civilians that bedeck her album are images, not propaganda--the same stuff that got her nominated for an Alternative Turner Prize in 2001. They're now assumed to be incendiary because, unlike art buyers, rock and roll fans are assumed to be stupid.

Christgau also takes care, as Fuller does not, despite presumably writing for an audience that has close to zero familiarity with the conflict in Sri Lanka, to detail what precisely the Tamils and the government are arguing about:

Ethnic enmity in the former Ceylon will ring a bell with fans of colonialism in Rwanda or Ireland, where divide-and-conquer also set the stage for civil war. The minority Tamil Hindus had a leg up until independence, whereupon the Sinhalese Buddhists took their revenge, though never at Tutsi-Hutu levels. The 1956 replacement of English by Sinhalese as the official language, onerous educational and other discrimination, and the gradual impoverishment of the Tamil northeast had inspired many resistance groups by the mid '70s. These were soon dominated by the LTTE, a Marxist-inflected ethnic movement committed to establishing an independent homeland called Eelam. Armed struggle, which began in 1983, has cost 65,000 lives in a nation of under 20 million.

Not to mention who exactly her father is, and how much contact M.I.A. has had with him (very little, as it turns out):

Her father, Arul Pragasam a/k/a Arular, joined the Tigers from the more conciliatory EROS group. He has never lived with her and hasn't seen her since 1995. Extensive online and library research revealed only scant reference to Arular, but he's definitely an LTTE big shot. Circa 1976 he trained with the PLO in Lebanon, where he took advantage of his engineering degree to become an explosives expert. Wonder whether he designed any jackets.

As M.I.A. has said publicly many times, including in the Tavis Smiley interview last month that Fuller selectively quotes, her concerns about "genocide" in Sri Lanka are not limited to government actions against Tamil separatists: "If I represent anything, it's what it's like to be a civilian caught up in a war." Finding a single songwriter to claim that "Frankly, she's very lucky to get away with supporting, even indirectly, perhaps the most ruthless terrorist outfit in the world," is not evidence of very much of at all. And the insinuating suggestion that "Paper Planes" compares "international drug dealing with selling records" is not only equally circumstantial but also flat out wrong: selling records has nothing to do it. ("I kind of want to leave it ambiguous for my fans," she told Smiley, which it assuredly is. I always figured it was about robbing drug dealers.)

This smear was old when it was being employed five years ago, and despite a pregnant Grammys performance, does not constitute "news" now, either--especially when the piece divulges exactly no new information about her putative relation with a rebel group she's had no formal connection with for the better part of two decades. For that matter, what about reporting her visa problems? The political views of an administration that profiles pop stars as potential terrorists might easily "rankle some people" too.

I mean, I know Sri Lanka is on the Genocide Red Alert Watch list for killing Tamils, and the ANC recognising it as clearly reaching those proportions has demanded it to be stopped...it's fantastic that she's increasing awareness about it!

Apparently, their defence secretary justified shelling hospitals recently, killing Tamil patients. Bloody hell!

I think MIA's exaggerations about civilian deaths and genocide(quoted below) speak for themselves about where her sympathies' lie. No reputable human rights oprganization has made these claims. So judge for yourselves.

"And there's a genocide going on, and it's kind of -- it's ironic that I am the only Tamil, and I've turned into the only voice for the Tamil people, the 20 percent minority in my country. And yeah, it's weird that I'm being given the opportunity."

"There's been a systematic genocide which has quiet thing because no one knows where Sri Lanka is. And now it's just escalated to the point there's 350,000 people who are stuck in a battle zone and can't get out, and aid's banned and humanitarian organizations are banned, journalists are banned from telling the story."

"Colombo government has massacred hundreds of thousands of civilians in order to eliminate the threat posed by a small yet defiant group widely known as the Tamil Tigers"

Zach Baron says:

How are any of those statements exaggerations? Tamils are a minority in Sri Lanka; there are indeed hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in what's essentially a civil war; the majority Colombo government is indeed repressive. As Amnesty International is quoted as saying in that Times piece, "both sides have terrible human rights records"--probably the truest thing in there.

I suppose that last quote is an exaggeration, as most people peg the casualty figure at under 100,000. But I might ask where you're pulling it from. Has M.I.A. actually said that?

In her interview she mentioned that there's only 4000 Tiger rebels and that the government can crush them in a matter of minutes.. How interesting...these rebels are running a guerilla war using women and children soldiers....so how exactly is the government suppose to identify the civillians from rebels. What about the woman suicide bomber that tried to pass as a civillian and blew her self up (http://uk.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUKTRE5186CM20090209).

MIA is a supporter of their rebel leaders sick fantasy of making a ahomeland for the tamils (as they currently do not have a country to call their homeland). Look at what the civillians that are fleeing are saying:http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gVoaDFmbCYS-Usz9ACDRIengj21QD969FNVG0

They are shot by the rebels for leaving them. The more civillians that leave the less strong their human shield becomes.

Hmmm, and the source of these claims into the Tiger's alleged recent attacks? The Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence Website. lol... Hardly a benchmark of crediblity. Ever wondered why they've banned journalists, medicine and humanitarian organisations from the battle zone? And the one aid agency allowed in - the ICRC? Gets its offices in Colombo stoned for saying they don't have enough body bags, staff, food or meds to deal with the humanitarian catastrophe happening in the Vanni. So who can really blame this idiots response to MIA. I'd be surprised if they didnt.

That the Sri Lankan government has massacred thousands of Tamils over the last few decades is a major cause for outrage, and I applaud her for having the balls to talk about it. Far from an exaggeration, The Lancet and British Medical Journal have put the casualty figures as being much higher.

LTTE are a terrorist orginisation! No matter which way you sing (or that you got knocked up), the fact remains that they are a terrorist.

I also hear that they are so low, that they are using your fellow Tamils as human shields. Why don't you sing a ballad about that and tell us how your own father is killing innocent Tamils???

So who are the people that are really killing the tamils them MIA????

Who are the people taking young children from their families, brain washing them and giving them guns and bombs???

A terrorist is terrorist, no matter which way you say those lyrics!!

I am an outsider (American) in this war but I fully support the Sri Lankan governement fight against terror. Well done Mr President. Don't listen to the brainwashed sympathisers!!!

Alan says:

I had the experience of working in NorthEast and South of Sri Lanka aftermath of Tsunami through an NGO. Actually, majority of Tamils are now living with Singhalese in Colombo/Western province. That is about 600k people. Jaffna has about 300k people and currently progressing like in south after government cleared the region. Only people is Wanni and Mulathive are suffering and population around 250k. They are under LTTE control! There is no genocide in SL. It is a lie to state there is a genocide when majority of Tamil people live without problems in Sinhala areas. True, they have to go through hardships due to LTTE terror, on requent security procedures. This is true in any country that face terror. Yesterday LTTE killed 16 civilians attempted to move to cleared areas. Tamil terror is a cancer and need be elimnated, no matter what Tamil's grievences were. This is the reason why USA, UK, EU and Inida have banned LTTE as a terror group.

SamL says:

We commend Sri Lankan government's relentless fight against terrorism. LTTE is a banned ruthless terror group, and have established links with Al-queda and Hammas. All democratic nations should hail SL approach and make this as a model how to eliminate terrorism. Terrorism will never be defeated by negotiations. At some point, LTTE terrors supporters in USA may even work with other groups against us. And MIA is a terrorist sympathiser. We should be careful of these people.

Shanti is funny (and dangerous). He justifies Ghandhi killing. This is the first time I am hearing hate against such a humanitarian legacy. This implies they (Tamils) will even kill mother Theresa's daughter if she voice's against terrorists. What a disgrace! Looks like LTTE and the supporters are human garbage. No wonder why US put them on terror list!

Cat is out again: US bannes Tamil front organization in Maryland: Geee guys, stop whinning about genocide, STOP your terrorism! read this (do not tell me US intelligence is dupped!):

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The U.S. Treasury Department on Wednesday announced it has frozen the assets of the Maryland-based Tamil Foundation, saying the foundation is being used to support terrorism. The Foundation is suspected of providing support to the Sri Lanka-based Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, known as the LTTE. "The LTTE, like other terrorist groups, has relied on so-called charities to raise funds and advance its violent aims," Adam Szubin, director of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, said in a statement. "We will continue to aggressively target attempts by any terrorist group to hide behind charities, front companies, or name changes to propagate terror against innocents around the world." The head of the Tamil Foundation also heads the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization, Treasury said. Treasury said that organization is the preferred means for sending funds from the U.S. to LTTE members in Sri Lanka. The violent LTTE has been seeking an independent state in northeastern Sri Lanka, where most of the island's minority ethnic Tamil population lives.

If there was a real genocide we have to kill the 60+ million Tamils in Tamil Nadu (conveniently forgotten by Tamil apologists). When you look at it the Sinhala are really in the minority and are fighting for their survival agaisnt a Tamil conspiracy. If Eelam were ever to be acheived ( very unlikely now) it would be the end of the Sinhala race (that would be the genocide)

Anil says:

M.I.A says that she has been given a responsibility and a platform to discuss Sri Lankan Tamil problem but she never condemns terrorist acts LTTE has done for last 25 years. LTTE is one of the most ruthless terror outfits banned by USA, UK, Canada, India and other major countries. LTTE, has killed respected Sri Lankan Tamil leaders and scholars such as Thiruchelvam, Kadirgamar, Amirthalingam, etc, because they were not extremists. They have killed Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sri Lankan Precedent R Premadasa. They killed 70000 plus innocent children, women, religious leaders and media personnel. They stabbed 43 buddhist monks to death in a bus by using swords and knives. They have killed hundreds of children in East region and hung in to coconut palms. They recruit children as young as 12 years to fight the war, as UN has outlined. They have killed Rajini Thiranagama, a leading Tamil writer and human rights advocate for her balanced opinions. They have linked up with terror outfits such as Al-Qaeda/Hamas and created a global network of terror. Justifiably, USA banned this terror outfit (please do not tell me that CIA was duped!). When Sri Lankan government started liberating Tamil people oppressed by LTTE terrorists, Tamils living in USA such as M.I.A want to protest. After 25 years of gloom, Tamils in liberated areas are starting to see the light. Terror supporters live in USA must understand that they are part of the problem that frankly take their own Tamil generations live in Sri Lanka back to stone age. Keep in mind, majority of Tamil population now live in Colombo, together with Singhala majority. True sometimes they have to go through security procedures like in any other country with terror threats to avoid killing of innocent people, including Tamils. If you want to spend some energy on helping Tamils, please return to Sri Lanka, if you do not like the poverty conditions in north, live with Singhalese in south. US will never support your cause. India will never pardon your terror outfit who killed Rajiv Gandhi. As an ?artist? M.I.A should be reasonable, should not be trying to paint a distorted picture. To the democratic world who fight terrorism, M.I.A may appear as a savior for terror mafia LTTE.

the facts is the world do not like LTTE, in case in the future if they wipe out the LTTE from srilanka, the main problem is going to be there till the emotionally trapped srilankan idiots solve the main problem, LTTE is a image of the srilankan tamil problem, untill and unless the core tamil problems in srilanka is solved, there wont be any future for srilanka..... all the world is accepting the fact the tamils are being discriminated by srilanka sinhala people... the current world climate dont like the LTTE's tactics that do not mean that world have neglected the core issues of srilankan problems, if srilankans want a one peaceful country then they have to share the power with tamil (which the india and rest of the world wanted the srilankan government to do) until then the turmoil in srilanka wont be over "I respect MIA for expressing the view about our peoples suffering"

Resistance says:

All the past Srilankan governments and the current regime and their followers are doing the same thing over and over. The current Srilankan government hired a load of people to write comments on any websites which has any Tamil related contents. And the other point is, if there is a Tamil talent trying to go up on the ladder, Srilankan propaganda machine will try to pull them down at any cost. In 1948 when the British left Srilanka, most of the administrative positions are occupied by Tamils. As soon as the majority Singala government came on the power they kicked the Tamils out. Since then it is happening till now. The Singalese politicians used the hatred and racism as their weapon to come to power. Basically whichever the party does the most damage to the Tamils will get elected.
A great Chinese philosopher once said "The enemy chooses what weapon we should use"

And definitely it is a systematic genocide taking place in Srilanka.

Except, according to this same article, the Genocide Prevention Project and the Human Rights Watch, right?

And again, I fail to see how statements like this one make M.I.A. an "apologist" for anything:

"In Sri Lanka, my home country, the Colombo government has massacred hundreds of thousands of civilians in order to eliminate the threat posed by a small yet defiant group widely known as the Tamil Tigers (also known as the LTTE or Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam). Make no mistake, the LTTE have engaged in reprehensible terrorist activities that have needlessly taken the lives of both civilians and heads of state. The LTTE’s use of child soldiers and suicide bombers is unconscionable, and has rightly been condemned by the international community. But now the eyeglass must turn to the Colombo government as the conflict enters its 25th year. The war has resulted in what many humanitarian groups are now calling genocide. And sadly, for the Tamil people, time is running out."

Are people really arguing that M.I.A.'s crime is using the word "genocide" when another word like "endless civilian deaths" or "ethnic warfare" would've more closely adhered to whatever global consensus there is about this conflict? Can't you call out the Colombo government without automatically defending the Tigers' practice of using child soldiers (an action she herself calls "unconscionable") or civilians as cover?

I can think Hamas is a criminal terrorist organization and still believe that Israelis should stop killing innocent civilians in Gaza. Isn't M.I.A.'s position more or less analogous, minus the "small yet defiant group" art-school/rock-star hyperbole?

No idea--although her byline is on it. If it's a set-up, someone did a horrible job making her sound like she actually supported the LTTE as a terrorist organization.

Exactly. And when journalists are banned from the war zone, and are simply state organs spewing filth in Sri Lanka, how the hell would a Sinhalese from Colombo, or anyone from the South of the island know that there isn't a genocide there in the Vanni up North? Not only did she live through it, she went back to the area and saw it for her self again in the 2000s.
MPS across the world have rightly recognised these acts of systematic genocide, and I'm glad she's getting the message out.

What it boils down to is, she does not need to answer to fools issuing death threats to her, panicking that someone like her, despite their best efforts, made it. No amount of "oh but we think she's talented" bs masks the fact they haven't got anything on her.

To be frank, their pathetic efforts to smear and intimidate her negate any claim they have for an explanation of her views. It simply legitimizes them even more. Unlike so many Tamils in Sri Lanka, M.I.A. is free to air her views now, and kudos to her.

Cody says:

Also, if both "sides" have terrible human rights records, are this lot accepting that the LTTE are the legitimate representatives of the Tamils in the civil war? Or is that parity of status with the Government of Sri Lanka only afforded when attempting to justify the Government's (let's face it) far bigger terror culpability and civilian death count over the years? That it has murdered and raped Tamils, and discriminated them systematically before the LTTE even formed and clearly up till this very day is clearly not an issue right?

As both the Government and the Tigers have horrid human rights records, why has there not been a single sanction imposed on the state? Why not a single UN resolution? Not a whiff of isolation for the Government's abominable crimes? The Tigers have been proscribed around the world, without evidence that they're a global threat, but when it comes to Sri Lanka, these are "internal matters" of the state.

Genocide is an understatement.

Dear Zach Baron,

Thanks for pointing out the vapidity of the NYTimes article, especially by bringing up the great reporting/commentary of The Voice's Robert Christgau.

Too bad the Voice decided to axe him, no?

And really too bad that your own analysis (and followups in the comments) clearly demonstrate a pretty shallow grasp of the situation in Sri Lanka. Christgau made a point of reading the history, trying to understand as much as he could, and never pretending (to himself and to his readers) that he knew the truth.

"'The small yet defiant group'art-school/rock-star hyperbole?" -- ??!?!

1. The problem is that her hyperbole is taken as fact by her fans and suddenly everyone's a frikkin expert on a country they'd never heard of before 2004.

2. The problem is that the LTTE has worldwide tentacles that makes it very difficult to speak out against them.

3. The problem is that the LTTE claims to defend tamils when most Tamils IN Sri Lanka are forced to give money and children (as recruits) to a cause they don't support.

4. The problem is that "Tamils" in Sri Lanka are not a monolithic minority...it's a heterozygous patchwork of classes, castes, and religions (Muslim, Christian, Hindu) and common bond is only language.

Here's an article that tries to address M.I.A.'s music and politics...written by another Sri Lankan woman who left at the same age as M.I.A.:

3.LTTE is an out come of discrimination practiced by GoSL against Tamils and not the cause
4. Unless the cause is addressed, even if LTTE is wiped out something else will pop up.
4. After 9/11 Bush just said every one including rebels like LTTE who fight for a cause as terrorist.
5. Even ANC has been labeled as a terrorist organization. If the issue was not resolved with hind sight of FW DeClerk and Nelson Mandela, ANC would still have been terrorist organization.
6. LTTE practices a kind of communist idealogy of eliminating dissent. I do not agree with that. But the world is still moving on with communist ideologist nations like China.
7. GoSL says itself as a democratically elected peoples Gov., it is no better that LTTE, kills journalists and other dissenters (Ex. Lasantha).
8. Both sides have erred, negotiate, grant a general amnesty to everyone involved, take up a Truth & Re conciliatory commission on the lines of South Africa.
9. Live and prosper peacefully.
Most of my points may not be relevant to the article, but just telling my views on some peoples comments.

Awful post, and as suspected, attracted a lot of LTTE supporters making accusations about genocide in Sri Lanka, which is funny since Zach Baron's column is about how the NYT brings nothing new to the table, which can be said about him. Hey Zach, as someone who probably couldn't point out Sri Lanka on a map a few months ago, can't read a word of Tamil, and takes the ever fashionable "Look at me, I'm taking on the media establishment" (while pandering to right-wing Tamil opinions) you might want to stick to commenting on things more appropriate for your intellect, like Britney Spears.

Couldn't see any Tamil paper, Magazine or Books in any of Colombo's posh shopping Malls, point is people are not there to buy these.
Muslims in Srilanka, their Mother tongue was Tamil, and many of those I met did not know Tamil, Claimed only their parents know Tamil, they as well as their Children they speak only Sinhalese. Is it Because of the GoSL or LTTE, I do not know??,To be frank - LTTE has forcefully evacuated Muslims from their territory a decade back.
TruthSeeker -
1. Ask GoSL to allow independent Journalists to verify facts in the so called liberated territories, 50% of the above posts will be irrelevant. And what ever you are telling may become true.
2. And all those suicide bomber in a refugee camp stories has come out only from the Government side (No independent verification), SL army and gov are capable of cooking up such stories, they only need to pick 1 or 2 people fleeing the fighting scene, force or trick them to carry something and explode this, You get that wonderful story to tell the world how they are trying desperately to save Tamils.
3. Tell the President to give a public Apology to Tamils for all the past wrongdoings by Sinhalese state and a future guarantee to look after them as equals. I am sure SL would get a lot of good will from the world community and from Tamils.
And I do agree that there are a lot Tamil people living under Government held territories than the rebel held ones. But the general mood is gloomy, people are afraid to speak. Just check the BBC website under south asia, except for that common Tamil man or women everyone else chose to give their names. & FYI: They did not speak against the government

Sorry Lanka says:

“War is also theirs, peace is also theirs; therefore the solution also should be theirs. Why don’t they come out with that and end the suffering?” asked a sulking school teacher in Vanni, frustrated at the diplomatic games and dilly-dallying of world powers in protecting the life and dignity of civilians, neither by themselves nor allowing the UN to do it. But the solution some of the powers envisage in what they call the ‘post-LTTE era’ goes back to the concentration camps of the Nazi times.

A proposal of the Colombo government that is being circulated and deplored by many of the human rights organizations and media in the West is the setting of ‘concentration camps’ in the guise of ‘rehabilitation’ of the civilians of Vanni.

Thousands of acres of land have already been identified for this purpose in the Vavuniyaa and Mannaar districts, news reports say.

The camps will be run for a period of three years according to the proposal.

The real aims of the camps are everybody’s knowledge: first to get money to run the Colombo government and to save it from economic collapse, citing camp expenditure, rehabilitation and development and ultimately to pave way for Sinhala colonization of the Tamil homeland and complete subjugation of Tamils, temporal and spiritual.

Responses of condemnation have come from the West, a British media describing it as the return of the barbed wire.

But, some Asian powers are enthusiastic about the programme, pledging money and support, media and human rights circles said. They see it as a prospective outlet of investment.

Unscrupulous show of greed is anticipatory in the competition of sharing the spoils of war.

In the meantime, world powers are engaged in a verbal show of sympathy for ceasefire and political solution, but they have not so far demonstrated any resoluteness in bringing them out. On the contrary they sabotaged any action by the Security Council of the UN.

Political and media circles in India, off the record comment that the subtle change in the stance of the Government of India as seen in the President’s Speech was neither spontaneous from the government nor due to pressure from Tamil Nadu, but was a half-hearted measure orchestrated by some world powers. They expect nothing positive out of it. When the transition from present to future is elusive for comprehension, the contemporary geniuses have a way of describing the phenomenon by putting the adjective ‘post’ before whatever that obsesses them.

Thus we have postmodernism, post 9/11 etc.

Some intellectuals in Colombo, Peradeniya and among the Sinhala expatriates have already started speaking about a ‘post-LTTE era’ abound with imaginations and wishful thinking that reach no limits.

With a great sigh of relief when some shades of the imaginations enlighten us on the magnanimity of the Sinhalese and the need for Tamils to be benefited by that there are the other sides that paint a vivid picture how a structural genocide of Tamils could be enacted.

Invariably the imaginations either don’t touch the point of meeting Tamil political aspirations substantially or point to the impossibility of the Sinhala state addressing to them.

In the conquests of the distant past, rulers did not merely stop at people. The land of the opponents was ploughed, mounted with donkeys, in order to desecrate and curse. Mahinda Rajapaksa has enough mind and donkeys to do the job, commented a government official in Vavuniyaa after witnessing the attitude behind the running of internment camps for injured and fled civilians.

Once again, it seems it is the American ambassador Robert Blake who has spilled out one of his valuable revelations.

The US ambassador was quoted by Voice of America as saying the Sri Lanka military’s capture of the Vanni region which he expects within weeks will not end the LTTE’s armed struggle as it still has a large number of guerrillas underground, relying on the support of the diaspora. He urged Colombo to reach a political settlement with Tamil leaders and with the Tamil diaspora.

Many now shed crocodile tears in India and in the international community for the genuineness of Tamil cause being misled by the LTTE and ask people to come out of it for emancipation. They should first ask themselves that when have they facilitated or supported feasible alternative space, justifying Tamil cause, asked a veteran Tamil national activist of the pre-militant era.

The Scribe says:

Why in gods name does the western media call the LTTE "rebels" and "freedom fighters". ... it's a romantic way to refer to people killing their young, either Tamil or Singhalese. When one is young you are a rebel, BUT when one kills, terrorizes and inflicts mental and physical trauma and have been deemed terrorists by world governments call them what they are. When one engages in terrorist activities then one becomes a TERRORISTS!!!! AS a Sri Lankan myself I see all Tamils and Singhalese as Sri Lankan ... even the LTTE. When one condones terrorist groups actions or supports them or even tries to justify their actions, then one becomes a TERRORIST.
The LTTE has been responsible for many, many atrocities, one can hardly keep track:
· The systematic killing of their own educated
· The massacre of Buddhist temples priests and scared sites.
· Recruiting of child soldiers ( people… this is not kids making wallets or growing coffee …this is getting a gun and running off to war, no training, no nutrition … nothing but expected to be canon fodder. Sorry … brainwashing and cyanide capsule provided)
· Bombing schools and hospitals.
· Levying taxes from the Canadian , UK and US ($30+ million a year) Tamil migrant population for the “war” resulting in rape and murder of relatives in Sri Lanka if unpaid.
War is a dirty business …. Atrocities will happen … don’t tell me none happened by the allies during WWI And II. BUT it’s the LTTE that has been named a terrorist organization by the Canadian, US and UK government.
The media reports there are 250,000 people caught behind enemy lines in Jafna, the last few miles of LTTE territory. Caught or detained by the LTTE as a human shield I can not tell as I haven’t been there … yet … stay with me on this … so if the Tamil population is 20% of a 20 million + population in Sri Lanka … where are the rest (3.65 million). They are happily living amongst the Singhalese, working, partying and glad that they are not under Prabakaran -The megalomaniac leader of the LTTE. Who incidentally has his wife and kids living in the UK and schooling there in private schools. Good for them I say …. I would like to finish with a little warning to the western world …. Yes … do have sympathy for the likes of MIA, the daughter of a known terrorist. Who apparently hasn’t kept in touch with her father …. Hmm …. Blood is thicker than water and why would she make it a open fact that keeps in touch …. Anyway soon LTTE will be taking over your cities (ex-London, Toronto) and let me tell you these folks know how to gang bang.
The majority of the Tamil (I say majority as there are very fine and exemplary Tamil people in the minority) population in Canada ruins the country. Do not assimilate or show any Canadian traits. The giving, caring and accepting attitude of this great country is a joke to these terrorists and terrorist supporters. Black and Hispanic gangs are Disney characters compared to the likes of the LTTE. Live and learn people … you live and make the mistakes your children will pay.
